We have proposed and developed a new wireless-optical signal converter utilizing stacked-patch antennas with a narrow gap and electro-optic (EO) crystal films for millimeter-wave radio-over-fiber systems. This converting device utilizes a structure of vertically stacked-patch antennas like the Yagi–Uda antenna, with a hybrid substrate composed of EO crystal films and low-dielectric-constant material plates. The electric field for wireless-optical signal conversion and the size of the patch antenna are increased by introducing the antenna and substrate stacked structure. Therefore, the conversion efficiency from wireless to optical signals can be improved. In the analysis by use of HFSS, the operational frequency was shifted to the higher range by 7Â GHz, and the optical modulation index was improved by 3.2Â dB with the double-stacked structure. In the experiments, the operational frequency shift by 8Â GHz and the modulation index improvement by 3.0Â dB were verified successfully, and the measured frequency response and directivity were in good agreement with the designed ones. The conversion of wireless 60Â GHz band signals with QPSK modulation and the transfer of the converted signal over 1Â km long fiber were also demonstrated.

For high-speed train communication system, broadband analog radio-over-fiber based backhaul networks with a centralized processing unit can reduce hard hand-over processes by prediction of train location and be tracking the train by adaptive optical path routing. In the system, an automatic bias control technique without any dither signals is important to avoid the degradation of the throughput. In the study, we design and demonstrate a single-sideband optical modulation using an optical IQ modulator.

We propose a THz communication system using the combination of high-gain antennas and an amplifier chain. A Cassegrain antenna used as a high-gain antenna enhances a link gain with an antenna gain of 40 dBi or more. Finally, an effective isotropic radiated power is achieved more than 40 dBm. The proof-of-concept demonstration is performed for the realization of THz point-to-point communication systems with moderate spectral efficiency.

We demonstrate 400-Gbps multi-core fiber based optical wireless communication using a newly developed two-dimensional photodetector array (2D-PDA). The 19-parallel beam from 19-core fiber can be successfully coupled with a 19-pixel 2D-PDA in free space.

We developed a 45-Gbaud, 32-pixel two-dimensional photodetector array (2D-PDA) device for multi-core based free-space optical (FSO) communication. In the demonstration using the multicore fiber (MCF) and 2D-PDA in free space, the simultaneous detection of four high-data-rate parallel beams was successfully achieved.

This paper reviews 90-GHz high-speed wireless links and high-resolution radars based on linear-cell systems consisting of radio-over-fibre for waveform distribution. We focus on applications for public transportation systems including airport runways, railways, etc.
