    We report record capacity data transmission at 305 Tb/s over 10.1 km, using space division multiplexing (SDM) with 19 channels. To realize such a large SDM channel number, we fabricated a trench-assisted homogeneous 19-core fiber with average intercore crosstalk of about dB at 1550 nm. We also fabricated a 19-channel SDM multiplexer/demultiplexer using free-space optics with low insertion losses and low additional crosstalk. The data signal transmitted through each SDM channel was 100 wavelength division multiplexing (100 GHz spacing) 2 86 Gb/s polarization-division-multiplexed quadrature phase shift keying signals and the spectral efficiency was 30.5 b/s/Hz.

    We investigate the performance of a self-homodyne coherent detection (SHCD) system using a 19 core multi-core fiber (MCF) and 16 wavelength-division-multiplexed channels. We show that SHCD, with the pilot-tone transmitted on a single MCF core and information carrying signals on the remaining cores, is compatible with space-division-multiplexed transmission, potentially relaxing laser linewidth and digital signal processing requirements due to phase noise cancellation. However, inter-core crosstalk can have an impact on performance and core selection. (C)2013 Optical Society of America

    Frequency-stabilized millimeter- and submillimeter-wave radio-over-fiber (RoF) signal generation is successfully demonstrated using an injection-locking laser with an optical frequency comb (OFC) source. A frequency-shifter-based OFC generator can easily provide a frequency-locked optical component with an available bandwidth of up to 1 THz. An injection-locking technique that uses this comb improves the signal-to-noise ratio of the RoF signal without any degradation of phase noise. © 2013 IEEE.

    A frequency-reconfigurable radio-over-fiber (RoF) signal convertor based on an optical frequency comb is proposed for application to a millimeter-wave/ terahertz/optical hybrid system. The frequency transition from the RoF signal at 83 GHz to the higher millimeter-wave and terahertz signals is successfully demonstrated.

    A frequency-reconfigurable radio-over-fiber transmitter is designed and demonstrated with an optical frequency comb source for millimeter-wave and terahertz signal transmission over a fiber-wireless hybrid link. Optical-to-radio and radio-to-optical converters with a high-speed photo mixer and frequency-heterodyne technique successfully perform coherent quadrature-phase-shift-keying signal generation and reception in the optical domain at 90 GHz and 300 GHz. A digital radio receiver also receives and demodulates the transmitted QPSK signal at 300 GHz with the same bit error rate behavior as in an optical link.

    We report a new PIN photodiode using an InAs/InAsGaAs quantum-dot absorption layer with avalanche multiplication. For this photodiode, excellent I-V curves showing avalanche multiplication and a high 3-dB cutoff frequency were achieved. Designing advanced wide bandwidth avalanche photodiodes over 40 GHz is challenging [1]. A PIN structure that has a multiplied absorption layer is advantageous for realizing a short transit time in contrast to a separated absorption and multiplication (SAM) structure. Moreover, quantum dot technologies applied for obtaining high photovoltaic efficiency in solar cells are very attractive. © 2013 IEEE.

    A W-band (75-110 GHz) frequency chirp signal with a bandwidth of 8 GHz and a pulse duration of 1 mu s is generated by an optical-modulator-based frequency quadrupler. The high extinction-ratio optical modulator can easily generate a clear optical two-tone signal to form a W-band signal with a high side-mode suppression ratio. The observed degradation of the single-sideband phase noise does not significantly differ from that of the theoretical limit in the frequency multiplication. We demonstrate that the frequency upconversion technique would be beneficial for an analog application that requires quality, such as in a high-precision radar system.

    Millimeter-wave and sub-millimeter-wave radio-over-fiber (RoF) technology with digital-signal-processingÂ? aided coherent detection can be a promising candidate for high-speed radio transmission links with a capacity of greater than 10 Gb/s if the energy consumption does not increase drastically. We demonstrate 100-GHzÂ? and 300-GHz-band simultaneous RoF signal generation using an optical frequency comb source comprising an optical frequency shifter in an amplified optical fiber loop, and its radio transmission over the air. 10-Gbaud quadrature-phase-shift-keying provides a capacity of 18.6 Gb /s with a 7% forward error correction overhead in single carrier signal transmission as well as in multi-carrier transmission. © 2013 SPIE.

    In this paper, we present a photonic wireless system operating in the W-Band (75-110 GHz) featuring ultra-high bandwidth as well as simple NRZ-OOK modulation format. By using a cascaded optical RF and data modulation approach on the transmitter side, flexible adjustment of the wireless RF carrier in the W-Band is achieved, while direct electrical to optical conversion with advanced photonic components on the receiver side enables true photonic wireless bridging. In first experiments, data rates up to 10 Gb/s have been experimentally demonstrated. © 2013 IEEE.

    We investigated a Mach-Zehnder modulator with asymmetric power splitting Y-branches. Output characteristics of a modulator depend on the relation between the power splitting ratios of the front and back Y-branches. By tuning the power splitting ratio of the front Y-branch, we achieved maximum power output operation and high extinction-ratio operation respectively.
