Radio-based nondestructive imaging is demonstrated with photonics-based signal source. Photonics technology has advantages on use of an amplified spontaneous emission noise from an optical amplifier utilized as an incoherent signal and easy distribution feature via an optical fiber network. Fiber-remoted optical-to-millimeter-wave converter irradiates 90-GHz radio waves based on an optical fiber network technology. Low-loss optical fibers enable scalability to increase of a number of converters and flexibility of location configuration of illuminators. Reflection imaging is performed in a 90-GHz band under single and multi-illumination configuration. Obtained images are consistent with theoretical resolution.

We propose new electro-optic modulators using gap-embedded patch antennas with stacked structure. Utilizing stacked structure, the antenna gain, electric field for modulation, and interaction length increase, then modulation efficiency increases 3.65 dB at 60 GHz.

We successfully designed and fabricated a highconversion-gain 100-GHz photoreceiver integrated with a UTC-PD and a PHEMT amplifier for 92-GHz carrier photonic wireless communication. Then, in a demonstration of 92-GHz carrier, OFDM, 16-QAM photonic wireless communication, we confirmed that high data rate of 11.03-Gbps (bit error rate of 1 x 10(-3)) could be achieved at a low optical input power, without post amplifiers for the photoreceiver. The designs and the results are discussed.

We propose a dual-hop network to high-speed trains by using a seamless fiber-millimeter-wave system for backhaul transmission and a high-speed in-train network. Transmission of a 64-QAM OFDM signal over the cascaded system is successfully confirmed.

We demonstrate frequency-stabilized millimeter-wave signal generation system using optical frequency locked-loop technique employed with an optical frequency comb. Observed frequency fluctuation system realized drastic reduction as compared with the fluctuation generated by two free-running lasers.

Multi-layered stacked patch-antennas on an electro-optic (EO) material are proposed for optical modulation. By using multi-layered structures, larger antenna gain can be obtained to induce stronger millimeter-wave electric fields. The induced millimeter-wave electric field can be used for optical modulation through the Pockels effects of the EO crystal. Since the antenna gain is enhanced by using multi-layered stacked patch-antennas, the modulation index improvement can be obtained.

We report a 30-110 GHz, high conversion gain, and high output photodetector consisting of a hybrid integration of a high-speed photodetector and an RF amplifier with an additional gain emphasis circuit. High data-rate photonic wireless communication over 44 Gbps was demonstrated with a predistortion technique. The minimum optical input power level for an error free operation was also discussed.

Conversion devices between free-space microwave/millimeter-wave and lightwave signals are required in Fiber-Wireless (Fi-Wi) links. In this paper, we propose a free-space millimeter-wave Electro-Optic (EO) modulator using Quasi-Phase-Matching (QPM) gap-embedded-patch-antennas on a low dielectric constant substrate. Free-space millimeter-wave signals can be received and converted directly to lightwave signals using the proposed device. It can be operated passively with no external power supply and operated with extremely low millimeter-wave losses. The QPM array structure can be adopted for improving modulation efficiency by considering the transit-time effects. The proposed device is easy connected to optical fiber, therefore Fi-Wi can be realized using the proposed device. Basic structure, analysis, and experimental results of the proposed device are discussed and reported for 40 GHz operational millimeter-wave bands.

The effects of in-phase/quadrature-phase (IQ) imbalances are evaluated with a direct IQ down-converter in the W-band (75-110 GHz). The IQ imbalance of the converter is measured within a range of +/-10 degrees in an intermediate frequency of DC-26.5 GHz. 1-8-G-baud quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) signals are transmitted successfully with observed bit error rates within a forward error correction limit of 2x10(-3) using radio over fiber (RoF) techniques. The direct down-conversion technique is applicable to next-generation high-speed wireless access communication systems in the millimeter-wave band.

We have developed a stable two-mode laser by using a quantum dot optical gain chip in an external cavity. In this study, we demonstrate continuous change of frequency separation of a two-mode laser by using a birefringent etalon filter. Since the polarization of the quantum dot optical gain chip is TE-dominant, the frequency separation of the two-mode laser is controlled by rotating the birefringent etalon filter. We can change the frequency separation from 84 to 93 GHz by using this method.

We have proposed a method by using a nonlinear optical technique to generate frequency-modulated (FM) signals in the terahertz (THz) band with much broader bandwidth. Periodically-poled lithium niobates (PPLNs) are excited by ultrashort pulses, and linearly frequency-chirped THz pulses are obtained by changing the periodicity of the PPLN gradually. The bandwidth achieved is approximately 1 THz at a center frequency of 1.5 THz. Using this wave in a FM continuous (CW) radar system is expected to result in a range resolution of ∼150 μm. This FM-THz signal generation technique will thus be useful in or future civil safety applications requiring high-resolution ranging or imaging.

We investigated fundamental characteristics of a hybrid integrated photoreceiver module with a 1.5 mu m-band quantum dot semiconductor optical amplifier (QD-SOA) and conventional pin-photodiode (pin-PD) as a first stage. The results indicated the photoreceiver integrated with a QD-SOA and QD-PD has the potential to be operated for signals over 100 Gb/s.

We successfully demonstrate 10-Gbbaud quadrature phase-shift keying signal transmission over a 4-km-long endlessly single-mode holey fiber using a wavelength-tunable semiconductor quantum dot (QD) laser. The transmission is carried out in the waveband of 1040.72-1070.02 nm with a bandwidth of 7.89 THz, which is broader than conventional wavebands such as the C and L bands. In the study, a QD laser notable for its wavelength stability and tunability is employed for its broad bandwidth availability on the transmission. Observed bit error rates are within a forward error correction limit of 2 x 10(-3) under homodyne coherent detection configuration with offline digital signal processing. The abundant frequency resources in this T band (1000-1260 nm) help increase the capacity of a transmission link using a large number of wavelength channels by the QD laser.

This paper reviews seamless networks based on radio-over-fiber (RoF) technology. We focus on train communication networks (TCNs) consisting of optical networks and many radio access units (RAUs). Waveform for radio communications can be effectively delivered to each RAU by RoF. The TCN can be controlled by train location information to reduce overhead due to hand-over in mobile communication systems.

A photonic terahertz synthesizer is configured and demonstrated by100-GH, 300-GHz and 600-GHz signal generation. An optical frequency shifter in an amplified optical fiber loop technique configures an optical frequency comb generator with a resultant optical bandwidth up to 2 THz. An observed phase noise characteristic by the photonic synthesizer is considerable for application to the complex modulation formats even in the terahertz bands.

We demonstrate a nondestructive electromagnetic-wave imaging system with a photonics-based W-band synthesizer, traveling-wave tube amplifier and focal-plane transistor array in real time manner. High-power amplifier with multi-watts output will enhance the quality of obtained images under transmission and reflection imaging configurations.
