We propose and experimentally demonstrate optical data exchange scheme between 16QAM and QPSK with narrow spacing of 50GHz. The use of coherent pump makes it free of phase noise from pumps, and enables the use of low-cost DFB as pump source.

A simple and reliable system based on analog radio-over-fiber and millimeter-wave-wireless is proposed for wireless signal transmission. High-throughput WLAN signals using high-order modulation and wide bandwidth is successfully transmitted and demodulated over the proposed system.

We propose and experimentally investigate a high-speed burst-mode LTE-A signal transmission on a seamlessly converged RoF and millimeter-wave system at 90 GHz. Satisfactory transmission performance over the converged RoF and a 1.2-m 90-GHz wireless link is achieved. The obtained results confirm the potential to use the system in future high-speed mobile and broadband access networks.

We propose a radio access network suitable for communications in high-speed railways employing a radio-on-radio- over-fiber and distributed antenna system. We present a proof-of-concept demonstration of wireless signal transmission over the system at 90 GHz. Standard LTE-A signals using QPSK, 16-QAM and 64-QAM modulation are successfully transmitted and demodulated. Satisfactory transmission performance with measured root-mean-square EVM well under the standard requirement is achieved. The obtained results indicate the potential to make use of the system in high-speed rail communications.

A wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) radio-over-fiber (RoF) de-multiplexer, which is specially designed for frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FM-CW) signal delivery systems, is newly developed. The characteristics of the developed de-multiplexer are described and then the de-multiplexing performances of 4-channel WDM 32-GHz-band and 8-channel WDM 48-GHz-band FM-CW RoF signals are evaluated with the de-multiplexer.

Millimeter-wave (MMW) signal generation devices using difference frequency generation (DFG) based on the second order nonlinear optical effect in a rectangular waveguide were studied in detail theoretically and experimentally. The temporal and spatial coupling process of a generated MMW signal to a TE10 mode in a rectangular waveguide embedded with a nonlinear crystal was analyzed using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. In the experiment, 60 GHz-band signals were successfully obtained from fabricated prototype devices using a rectangular waveguide embedded with z-cut LiTaO3 crystal.

Terahertz-wave signal transmission is demonstrated using quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) by photonics. Small frequency fluctuations using a frequency-locked optical frequency comb are capable of generating a 80-MHz-bandwidth 16-ary-QAM signal with a data rate of 195 Mb/s.

We propose a frequency-octupling technique for millimeter-wave and terahertz signal generation using cascaded optical frequency multipliers based on optical modulation. A millimeter-wave-capable optical frequency doubler connected to an optical frequency quadrupler provides a 100-200-GHz signal whose number of multiplications is eight. The observed phase-noise degradation is followed by theoretically expected degradation.

A new millimeter-wave (MMW) signal generation device using a rectangular waveguide and second order nonlinear optical effect is proposed. Using a T-shaped rectangular waveguide with a suspended LiTaO3 crystal, adiabatic MMW signal injection into the waveguide is obtainable through optical difference frequency generation in the crystal. This device is easy for coupling to standard rectangular waveguide circuits compared with the proto-type devices where a nonlinear crystal is completely embedded into a rectangular waveguide. Analysis, design and preliminary experimental results are reported.

We propose a delta-sigma modulation scheme for low- and medium-frequency signal transmission in a digital photonic network system. A 10-Gb/s-class optical transceiver with a delta-sigma modulator utilized as a high-speed analog-to-digital converter (ADC) provides a binary optical signal. On the signal reception side, a low-cost and slow-speed photonic receiver directly converts the binary signal into an analog signal at frequencies from several hundreds of kilohertz several tens of megahertz. Further, by using a clock and data recovery circuit at the receiver to reduce jitters, the single-sideband phase noise of the generated signals can be significantly reduced.

Precise imaging of obstacles and foreign-object debris (FOD) is one of the most important security technologies for avoiding trouble in advance. Recently, we have focused on an optical fiber connected millimeter-wave radar system using a radio over fiver (RoF) technique for effectively detecting FOD over the large area of an airport runway. In this paper, we introduce high-speed photonic devices such as a W-band frequency modulated continuous-wave (FM-CW) signal generator, a highly-sensitive quantum dot (QD) photodetector, and a QD optical frequency comb laser (QD-CML) with harmonically optical pulsation. It is expected that these advanced photonic device technologies will become potential candidates for use in the RoF technique to realize the optical fiber connected millimeter-wave radar system.

We have developed a high-conversion-gain analog photoreceiver for millimeter-wave radio-over-fiber applications. The performance was tested with an optical back-to-back configuration at a symbol rate of 1.76-2.2 Gbaud in pi/2-shift BPSK and 16-QAM at a single carrier frequency of 32 GHz.

A multigigabit relay transceiver system based on analog radio-over-fiber technology is proposed and experimentally evaluated for broadband radio-signal transmission in the millimeter-wave band, particularly at 60 GHz. The combination of a high-speed optical modulator and a photodiode provides signal delivery over an optical fiber. The observed dynamic range and resultant error vector magnitude of a 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation signal compliant with the IEEE 802.11ad Standard, designated for a wireless local access network at 60 GHz, can be within the limit set by the standard. © 2013 IEEE.

A two-wavelength emission laser (two-mode laser) has been fabricated using semiconductor quantum dots as the gain medium in the external cavity configuration. Two-mode laser emission with a separation of 98.8 GHz has been achieved by controlling the etalon and narrow-band filter setting.
