A semiconductor optical amplifier was fabricated by incorporating highly stacked InAs quantum dots (QDs) as a gain media. Twenty InAs QD layers were successfully stacked through the strain-compensation technique, without any deterioration of crystal quality. A wide-range 1.55 mu m band gain was observed, and maximum gain reached 25 dB at 1530nm when the input power was below -40 dBm. (C) 2014 The Japan Society of Applied Physics

We investigated a 1.5-mu m-wavelength InAs-based quantum-dot (QD) absorption layer for high-speed and high-sensitivity photodetectors in advanced optical-fiber communications. The photodetector, which contained 20 stacked absorption layers of InAs/InGaAIAs QDs using the strain-compensation technique, exhibited a high absorption coefficient, avalanche multiplication effect, and a low dark current. It could operate at a low bias voltage for a p-type-intrinsic-n-type (PIN) diode structure. We expect that the 3-dB bandwidth at a low bias voltage would be approximately 50 GHz, and that the gain and bandwidth product in the avalanche multiplication region would be 150 GHz at a high bias voltage. Optical wavelength conversion (OWC) is expected to be a desirable function in future optical transparent networks. Since high-order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) is more sensitive to the phase noise, in the OWC of high-order QAM signals, it is crucial to suppress the extra noise introduced in the OWC subsystem, especially for the scenario with multiple cascaded OWCs. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a pump-linewidth-tolerant OWC scheme suitable for high-order QAM signals using coherent two-tone pumps. Using 3.5-MHz-linewidth distributed feedback (DFB) lasers as pump sources, our scheme enables wavelength conversion of both 16QAM and 64QAM signals with negligible power penalty, in a periodically-poled Lithium Niobate (PPLN) waveguide based OWC. We also demonstrate the performance of pump phase noise cancellation, showing that such coherent two-tone pump schemes can eliminate the need for ultra-narrow linewidth pump lasers and enable practical implementation of low-cost OWC in future dynamic optical networks. This letter presents a general model for the performance of spatial-division-multiplexing systems using self-homodyne detection. The model is applicable to single and dual polarization square M-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signals, assuming arbitrary signal and pilot tone optical signal-to-noise ratios. Its validity is demonstrated using a seven-core multicore fiber link with quadrature phase shift keying and 16-QAM signals, comparing the performance of self-homodyne detection with intradyne detection.

An optical frequency comb source provides a terahertz-frequency-capable optical two-tone signal with an enhancement of the optical signal-to-noise ratio using an injection-locking technique. No phase-noise degradation between the signal with and without injection locking has been observed.

We demonstrated frequency-quadruple optical two-tone signal generation using integrated modulator driven by one-port RF signal input without optical filters. As a result, we generated the two-tone signal and the spurious suppression ratio was 27 dB.

We propose an extinction-ratio and chirp tunable modulator in single-drive operation. Using the modulator, we demonstrated precise amplitude modulation without parasitic phase modulation. Extinction-ratio was larger than 52.2 dB, with low chirp (<vertical bar 0.007 vertical bar) operation.

We demonstrate 12-Gbaud QPSK signal transmission in a fiber-wireless link and compare a modulator-based optical two-tone generator and an optical heterodyning with free-running lasers. The obtained frequency fluctuation of the two-tone system meets the requirements of the radio regulations.

This paper describes high-speed optical modulation and detection devices for radio-over-fibre ( RoF) systems which can distribute millimetre-wave signals over optical fibres with low-loss, and RoF-based high-performance imaging systems which can be used for foreign object debris in runways or railways. High-speed and high-sensitivity photo-detection would be very important to achieve high-resolution imaging. We will share our recent research results on precise lightwave modulation techniques and on high-speed photodetectors using quantum dots.

High-speed coherent transmission at 325 GHz is successfully demonstrated with a 20-Gbaud QPSK signal. A frequency-locked terahertz signal can be provided by an optical-modulation-based optical frequency comb signal. A high-gain antenna with a gain of 46 dBi is suitable to extend the transmission distance up to 15 m without requiring a terahertz amplifier.

The technology of encapsulating a microwave signal into a terahertz carrier and an optical signal is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. Broad bandwidth terahertz radio can encapsulate existing microwave services, including advanced mobile communication signals, by using photonics technology. The concept of radio-on-terahertz-over-fiber helps to realize the future design of mobile fronthaul links. These links will have seamless connectivity between radio and optical networks because of the low latency of the links, which results from the use of analog signal transmission technology.
