We proposed a variable linewidth light source using random walk phase noise. As a demonstration, the impact of the laser linewidth on the error-vector magnitude performance in the optical QPSK transmission was evaluated by using the proposed laser source experimentally, where the linewidth tunable range was from 40 kHz to 5 MHz.

We present a transmission of radio signals in high-frequency band over a seamless fiber-FSO system for ultra-dense radio access network. We successfully transmitted 80-Gb/s and 40-Gb/s 2×2 MIMO FBMC-OQAM signal in the 90-GHz band over the DL and UL direction.

A linear-cell-based radio-over-fiber (LC-RoF) system is proposed and demonstrated for efficient mobile communication in high-speed trains without hard handover processes. The configuration of the LC-RoF network and possible router architectures are discussed for the field trial test of the proposed system and for advanced systems in the future. Via the LC-RoF network, 90-GHz, millimeter-wave radio access between the ground and a train car is operated in a centralized manner. The resulting throughput of 1.5 Gbit/s is achieved in the field trial test, which is comprised of 250-Mbaud four-subcarrier differential quadrature phase-shift keying with a forward-error correction code implemented in field-programmable gate arrays to the Shinkansen train traveling at 240 km/h without any interruptions in the connections at the change of radio access units.

We devised an optical intensity modulator whose transfer function is an approximate four-level step function. The method employed to generate the required transfer function in the intensity domain is described, and the designed response is experimentally demonstrated using the fabricated modulator.

To alleviate the danger of foreign object debris on runways, Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave linear cell radar based detection systems have been evaluated in the literature. This radar uses a 90 GHz millimeter wave and radio-over-fiber (RoF) to achieve high detection accuracy and low cost. This paper reports the experimental results of interference mitigation experiments at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. False images formed due to interference can be suppressed by performing simple signal processing on more than one radar image in which the transmission delay in RoF links is discrepant.

We designed and fabricated a zero-bias operational uni-travelling carrier photodetector for high outputs, and achieved a photocurrent saturation of 7 mA and an output saturation of -1 dBm at 110 GHz at 0 V. Furthermore, we observed that the output performance at 0 V could be improved by reducing the thickness of the InP layer to 70% of that in the original design. The results of the simulation showed that the photocurrent and RF output power were nearly doubled in the 100 GHz range. The device design and the experimental results have been discussed herein.

© 2019 EuMCE. We developed an intermediate frequency-over-fiber technology to transmit an IEEE802.11ad packet in the W-band with a simple structure, and demonstrated it using an optical single-sideband modulation. The setup consists of an up-converter, based on a second-order harmonic mixer with a power amplifier, and an optical IQ modulator with an automatic bias control. It can transmit an IEEE802.11ad packet in 16-QAM under an error vector magnitude of 5.9% at the frequency of 88.9 GHz. The proposed IFoF scheme is suitable for a high-speed telecommunications such as the 5th generation mobile system and beyond or a high-resolution radar system in the millimeter-wave.
