    Seamless conversion from millimeter-wave radio signals to optical baseband signals was demonstrated using a direct IQ down-converter.     We investigate a technique to suppress undesired third-order harmonics of two-tone lightwave signals using cascaded Mach-Zehnder modulators. Third-order harmonics, which determines the signal-to-noise ratio and side-mode suppression ratio, are dominant spurious components in two-tone lightwave signals. We were able to improve the linearity of modulator and demonstrated 14 dB suppression of third-order harmonics at 10 GHz with the technique.

    We have successfully realized the non-bias operation of an ultra-wide bandwidth uni-traveling-carrier photodetector (UTC-PD) using a low carrier concentration of 3 x 1014 cm(-3) in the carrier collection layer for future high-density photonic integration. A 3-dB bandwidth above 110 GHz was confirmed without a bias circuit. In this paper, we discuss the proposed design and the experimental results obtained for the frequency response and maximum RF output power.

    We propose a high-speed uplink burst-mode LTE-A signal transmission on a converged millimeter-wave and radio-over-fiber system. By using a newly developed burst-mode optical amplifier, we successfully transmit an uplink 5-carrier component LTE-A signal over a converged 5-m 92.5-GHz wireless link and 20-km radio-over-fiber system.

    Wavelength characteristics of the extinction ratio of optical Mach-Zehnder modulator using an active Y-branch is evaluated over C-band wavelengths. The observed extinction ratios are achieved greater than 60 dB at all of the wavelengths by optimization of applying voltage to the Y-branch by each wavelength.

    We report high-gain optical-to-electrical and electrical-to-optical converters for application to an analog radio-over-fiber link for an uplink signal transport on a mobile fronthaul. A 50-dB gain link with a relatively low noise figure provides an RF sensitivity of less than 90 dBm.

    The technology of encapsulating a microwave signal into a terahertz carrier and an optical signal is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. Broad bandwidth terahertz radio can encapsulate existing microwave services, including advanced mobile communication signals, by using photonics technology. The concept of radio-on-terahertz-over-fiber helps to realize the future design of mobile fronthaul links. These links will have seamless connectivity between radio and optical networks because of the low latency of the links, which results from the use of analog signal transmission technology.

    The two-mode lasing is obtained at the telecom-band using an InAs quantum dot gain chip. The wavelengths of the two modes were 1539.73 and 1540.44 nm corresponded to the frequency separation of 89.8 GHz which generated millimeter wave signal.

    We propose a pump-linewidth-tolerant wavelength conversion scheme with coherent two-tone pump, and demonstrate high quality wavelength conversion of 64QAM signals with <0.3-dB penalty at BER of 10(-3) even using 3.5MHz-linewidth DFB pump source.
