We investigated a lithium niobate (LiNbO3) single Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) with an active Y-branch, which is similar to an optical Y-branch switch. Using the modulator, we demonstrated high extinction-ratio operation (&gt
60 dB) and confirmed the function and the useful of the active Y-branch MZM.

In this paper, we present a photonic wireless system operating in the W-Band (75-110 GHz) featuring ultra-high bandwidth as well as simple NRZ-OOK modulation format. By using a cascaded optical RF and data modulation approach on the transmitter side, flexible adjustment of the wireless RF carrier in the W-Band is achieved, while direct electrical to optical conversion with advanced photonic components on the receiver side enables true photonic wireless bridging. In first experiments, data rates up to 10 Gb/s have been experimentally demonstrated. © 2013 IEEE.

We propose a coherent optical and radio seamless network concept that allows broadband access without deployment of additional optical fibers within an optical fiber dead zone while enhancing network resilience to disasters. Recently developed radio-over-fiber (RoF) and digital coherent detection technologies can seamlessly convert between optical and radio signals. A millimeter-wave radio with a capacity greater than 10 Gb/s and high-speed digital signal processing is feasible for this purpose. We provide a preliminary demonstration of a high-speed, W-band (75-110 GHz) radio that is seamlessly connected to an optical RoF transmitter using a highly accurate optical modulation technique to stabilize the center frequencies of radio signals. Using a W-band digital receiver with a sensitivity of -37 dBm, we successfully transmitted an 18.6Gb/s quadrature-phase-shift-keying signal through both air and an optical fiber. Demand on high speed communication and broadband access connection for fast moving passengers is rapidly increasing. However, the current wireless access communication techniques for railway which are mainly based on GSM for rail, satellite, and macro-cell cellular networks cannot meet the requirement of communication on fast moving trains. Cellular networks with small cell size and high carrier frequencies can be realized as a promising solution to overcome the current obstacles. In that situation, a radio-over-fiber distributed antenna system using WDM technology can be an attractive means to connect small base stations along the railway track to the control centers. However, considering a huge number of base stations placed along the railway track, power consumption will become one of the main concerns. In this paper, we investigate and optimize power consumption and energy efficiency of a Radio-over-Fiber distributed antenna system (RoF DAS) for railway. Based on the model, optimum system design in terms of remote antenna cell size and number of cells in a WDM ring are derived with respect to system energy consumption and efficiency. From the model we can also determine an appropriate scheme to upgrade a currently deployed conventional cellular network to a system employing RoF DAS technology. The power consumption and energy efficiency of the conventional and the upgraded systems are compared. The results demonstrate a significant save of power consumption and remarkable enhancement of energy efficiency when using a RoF DAS system. © 2013 SPIE.

We evaluated the single side-band phase noise of a 40 GHz beat signal generated by two free-running lasers. This allowed us to verify the utility of the two free-running lasers is verified as a light source for a next-generation radio-over-fiber system using frequency such as those in the millimeter-wave and terahertz bands. We also measured the phase noise of a frequency quadrupler using a Mach-Zehnder modulator for comparison. The phase noise of the two free-running lasers and the frequency quadrupler are - 63.85 and -95.22 dBc/Hz at a 10 kHz offset frequency, respectively. Transmission of 3GPP LTE signal over a seamlessly integrated radio-over-fiber and millimeter-wave wireless link is theoretically analyzed and experimentally demonstrated. We successfully transmitted and demodulated standard LTE eNB conformance test signals using QPSK, 16-QAM and 64-QAM modulation format for user data over the proposed system. The measured EVM is well under the required limit defined for the test signals, showing the potential to use the link as a high capacity backhauling system for high speed mobile networks using small cells and/or high carrier frequency at millimeter-wave.

Optical frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FM-CW) signal generation based on a high-precision optical modulation technique is successfully demonstrated for full-band millimeter-wave (MMW) radar in the W-band (75-110 GHz) and detection of an optical fiber cut by optical frequency domain reflectometry. The optical frequency up-converter based on radio-over-fiber technology creates a high-speed pulse of the FM-CW signal with broad bandwidths, and the signal degradation agrees with theoretically estimated values. The dual purpose of the optical FM-CW signal for MMW and optical imaging will be useful for a distributed antenna radar system with a MMW signal and sensing of the optical distribution network.

Latency is an important figure to describe performance of transmission systems for particular applications, such as data transfer for earthquake early warning, transaction for financial businesses, interactive services such as online games, etc. Latency consists of delay due to signal processing at nodes and transmitters, and of signal propagation delay due to propagation of electromagnetic waves. The lower limit of the latency in transmission systems using conventional single mode fibers (SMFs) depends on wave propagation speed in the SMFs which is slower than c. Photonic crystal fibers, holly fibers and large core fibers can have low effective refractive indices, and can transfer light faster than in SMFs. In free-space optical systems, signals propagate with the speed c, so that the latency could be smaller than in optical fibers. For example, LEO satellites would transmit data faster than optical submarine cables, when the transmission distance is longer than a few thousand kilometers. This paper will discuss combination of various transmission media to reduce negative impact of the latency, as well as applications of low-latency systems.

Multi-input multi-output (MIMO) transmission of two millimeter-wave radio signals seamlessly converted from polarization-division-multiplexed quadrature-phase-shift-keying optical signals is successfully demonstrated, where a radio access unit basically consisting of only optical-to-electrical converters and a radio receiver performs total signal equalization of both the optical and the radio paths and demodulation with digital signal processing (DSP). Orthogonally polarized optical components that are directly converted to two-channel radio components can be demultiplexed and demodulated with high-speed DSP as in optical digital coherent detection. 20-Gbaud optical and radio seamless MIMO transmission provides a total capacity of 74.4 Gb/s with a forward error correction overhead of 7%. We achieved record 109-Tb/s transmission over 16.8 km, using space division multiplexing (SDM) together with conventional multiplexing technology. 7-core SDM, 97 WDM (100-GHz spacing), 2 x 86 Gb/s PDM-QPSK signals were used. The spectral efficiency was 11.2 b/s/Hz. SDM transmission was realized using a multi-core fiber with ultra-low-crosstalk (less than -90.0 dB/km at 1550 nm) and high performance SDM MUX/DEMUX. The overall SDM crosstalk of -53 dB caused almost no penalty for the PDM-QPSK transmission.
