    In this paper, we describe seamless networks based on millimeter and terahertz wave radio links using waveform transfer over optical fibers. Coherent optical transceivers with digital signal processing provide transmission impairment compensation in both optical and radio sections, where devices for the signal processing are implemented at edges of the links. Waveforms, which include the modulation formats, the symbol rates, etc., are maintained in the entire links, to reduce transmission latency and energy consumption in the network.

    High-performance photodetectors (PDs) for radio over fiber (RoF) applications over 60 GHz were designed and fabricated. The RF output was investigated while a high linearity was observed for two designs: a low carrier concentration InGaAs absorption layer in a PIN structure and a low carrier concentration collection layer in a unitravelling-carrier (UTC) structure. The RF output performances of both PIN and UTC structures were studied at 67 GHz and 100 GHz respectively. High photocurrent densities could be obtained from both structures (21.7 kA/cm(2) in the PIN structure and 35.4 kA/cm(2) in the UTC structure). The PIN structure exhibited a slightly higher current density of 1.6 times than the UTC structure. The frequency response of the UTC-PD exhibited excellent flatness up to 110 GHz, with a 3 dB bandwidth beyond 110 GHz. In addition, maximum RF output powers of +6.8 dBm at 67 GHz and -5 dBm at 100 GHz was successfully obtained. The space charge effect could be ruled out for the output linearity, but avoiding overheating in the p-contact metal had to be considered. By modifying impedance matching circuit designs, the maximum RF output power level of 3 dB can be improved.

    The millimeter-wave (MMW) radar is a promising candidate for high-precision imaging because of its short wavelength and broad range of available bandwidths. In particular in the frequency range of 92-100 GHz, which is regulated for radiolocation, an atmospheric attenuation coefficient less than 1 dB/km limits the imaging range. Therefore, a combination of MMW radar and distributed antenna system directly connected to optical fiber networks can realize both high-precision imaging and large-area surveillance. In this paper, we demonstrate a multi-channel MMW frequency-modulated continuous-wave distributed radar system connected to an analog radio-over-fiber network.

    We demonstrate an optical-electrical hybrid equalizer, which comprises an optical domain equalizer fabricated using optical filter banks and an electrical filter in a digital domain by a digital signal processing, to experimentally demodulate degraded 40-Gbaud quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) signal. The optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) required for a BER of 1 x 10(-3) is improved to 7 dB without an optical equalizer (OEQ) under the back-to-back condition. The fluctuation in the OEQ strength between 0-6 dB will not affect signal quality significantly. The signal degradation caused by the frequency response of devices was minimized using by the hybrid equalizer.

    In this paper, optical frequency-chirped signal generation using a high-order optical modulation technique is investigated. An optical frequency comb generator based on optical modulation is utilized as a frequency multiplier. Its multiplication factor of 12 allows designing a 300GHz terahertz-band radar system. An input signal at the central frequency of 25GHz with a chirp bandwidth of 1GHz, 2GHz, and 3GHz provides 6GHz, 12GHz, and 18GHz optical signals at 6th-order harmonics, respectively. A frequency separation of the +6th and -6th-order components is equal to 300 GHz, with a chirp bandwidth of 12GHz and 24GHz. The proposed technique can be used to design high-precision imaging systems.

    We demonstrate a robust and modulation-format-transparent multicasting wavelength converter based on a Mach-Zehnder optical comb generator. All the wavelength-converted channels show maximum 0,6 dB and 1.1 dB penalties for QPSK and 16QAM signals, respectively.

    In Fibre-Wireless (Fi-Wi) links, conversion devices between wireless microwave/millimetre-wave and lightwave signals are required. In this paper, we propose a wireless millimetre-wave-lightwave signal converter using an electro-optic (EO) modulator with Quasi-Phase-Matching (QPM) array of orthogonal-gap-embedded patch-antennas on a low-k dielectric material. Wireless millimetre-wave signals can be received and converted directly to lightwave signals using the proposed device. It can be operated with no external power supply and extremely-low millimetre-wave losses. The orthogonal-gap-embedded patch-antennas can be used for receiving dual-linearized or circular polarizations of wireless millimetre-wave signals. The QPM array structure can be adopted for enhancing modulation efficiency by transit-time effects consideration. Structure, analysis, and experimental of the proposed device are discussed for 40GHz operational millimetre-wave bands.

    Microstrip patch antennas feed to optical waveguides in an electro-optic (EO) modulator are proposed for millimeter-wave radar system. Reflected millimeter-wave radar signals can be received by the microstrip patch antennas and converted directly to lighwave signals through EO modulation. The lightwave signals can be distributed using low loss optical fibers. Millimeter-wave loss and distortion are almost negligible. Device analysis and experiment for 40GHz millimeter-wave bands are discussed.

    We report current research progress on a metamaterial antenna integrated to an optical modulator for millimeter-wave-photonic links. The metamaterial antenna is composed by an array of electric-LC resonators on a LiNbO3 optical crystal. Large millimeter-wave electric field is induced across the capacitive gaps of the resonators due to free-space millimeter-wave irradiation. Optical modulation through Pockels effects can be obtained when light propagates along the capacitive gaps. The integrated device is operated effectively by considering interaction between millimeter-wave and lightwave electric fields along the capacitive gaps. Basic operations of the integrated device for 90GHz millimeter-wave bands are reported and discussed. Optical sidebands with carrier-to-sideband ratio of about -60dB by millimeter-wave irradiation power of similar to 20mW can be experimentally measured using optical spectrum analyzer.

    We investigate long-distance space-division multiplexed self-homodyne transmission in two synchronized recirculating loops. Compared to intradync detection, PDM-64QAM transmission distance with DFB lasers is doubled and 6800km PDM-QPSK transmission, within 1dB of intradyne detection, is achieved.

    A government-funded R&D program aiming at a resilient optical and millimeter-wave wireless link for a novel span protection scheme in a disaster recovery is presented.
