    A high-speed DQPSK optical modulator is fabricated with a thin lithium niobate substrate. Decrease in the propagation loss of electrodes and a low half-wave voltage, which can be realized by fabrication of a ridge-type optical waveguide structure, can help achieve 120-Gb/s (60-Gbaud) NRZ-DQPSK modulation with full electrical-time-division-multiplexing technique.

    Electromagnetic waves propagating in air are visually observed with phase evolution in real time by live electro-optic imaging technique. We show how geometrical and crystallographic arrangements of an electro-optic sensor plate enable the realization of the real-time visual observation of traveling 100-GHz electromagnetic waves. For this purpose, a generation technique for a 100-GHz optical local oscillator signal at 780 nm was newly developed, whose optical wavelength is suitable for the ultra-parallel RF electric field data acquisition by a Si-CMOS image sensor.     We demonstrate a digital optical Costas loop for real-time demodulation of a high-speed BPSK signal. The optical carrier is recovered by a DSP with high-bandwidth sampling at the frontend. A 10-Gb/s BPSK signal is demodulated.

    We demonstrated 16 QAM using a quad-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator with polarization-multiplexing. This modulator generates two QPSK signals with orthogonal polarization. 16 QAM is synthesized from the QPSK signals by using a polarizer.

    We propose a polarization-multiplexing QPSK modulator for 16 QAM generation. 16 QAM is synthesized from two QPSK signals with orthogonal polarization by a polarizer. Generation of 40 Gb/s 16 QAM with the BER of 8.13x10(-6) was demonstrated.

    We overview the recent progress of the novel experimental imaging scheme to intuitively analyze RF signal wave propagations. The scheme is based on a live-electrooptic-imaging camera (LEI camera; http://lei-camera.nict.go.jp/), which was invented and originally prototyped by NICT, and it involves the real-time visualization of phase evolution in RF wave electric fields. The scheme was demonstrated to be effective for determining the immediate essence of RF wave propagations.

    A 100-GHz-class live electrooptic imaging camera (LEI-camera), a novel microwave and millimeter-wave instrument, has been implemented for a scheme of W-band wave analyses. The first real-time visualization of W-band waves as phase-resolved images and phase-evolving movies has been successfully demonstrated, and the relevant images and/or movies obtained have been applied to the analyses of 100-GHz traveling waves. In conjunction with complementary numerical simulation approaches, studies have been conducted on a mode interaction between a ZnTe slab waveguide and a free space as well as on the loss tangent effect on W-band wave propagations. On the basis of the observed images and/or movies with live electrooptic imaging camera, some interesting analytical results have been obtained.

    We present an imaging system that enables real-time magnitude and phase detection of modulated signals and its application to a Live Electro-optic Imaging (LEI) system, which realizes instantaneous visualization of RF electric fields. The real-time acquisition of magnitude and phase images of a modulated optical signal at 5 kHz is demonstrated by imaging with a Si-based high-speed CMOS image sensor and real-time signal processing with a digital signal processor. In the LEI system, RF electric fields are probed with light via an electro-optic crystal plate and downconverted to an intermediate frequency by parallel optical heterodyning, which can be detected with the image sensor. The artifacts caused by the optics and the image sensor characteristics are corrected by image processing. As examples, we demonstrate real-time visualization of electric fields from RF circuits.
