We propose a flexible and low-latency cascaded fiber-wireless system for future mobile fronthauling using seamless combination of fiber-optic and millimeter-wave links. Successful transmission of intraband and interband carrier aggregation LTE-A signals over the system is experimentally confirmed. Satisfactory performance is achieved owing to the use of a high-quality optical millimeter-wave signal generation technique at the transmitter and a proposed high-performance self-homodyne detection at the receiver.

We demonstrate high spurious suppression ratio single-sideband modulation by a high extinction-ratio parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator. An electrical third-order nonlinearity suppression technique can enhance the suppression ratio as high as 47 dB.

We experimentally evaluate the time-varying crosstalk frequency response of a multicore fiber. Our findings suggest that dynamically adaptive transmission would be able to exploit this behavior, to improve the performance of crosstalk-limited links.

We demonstrate that our recently proposed chirp measurement technique can be applied to the measurement and visualization of the small-signal dynamic chirp characteristics of modulators in vector space for the first time. Both discrete modulators and those integrated in externally modulated laser modules can be characterized by this method. The results agree with existing method to the first order approximation, whilst dynamic chirp change can also be measured during amplitude transition.

We designed a high-baud-rate UTC photodetector without a bias circuit for the first time. The photodetector's wideband frequency response over 100 GHz and clear eye diagrams up to 107 Gbaud were confirmed at 0 V. Bit error rate is discussed for 56 Gbaud and 107 Gbaud.

We propose a novel high-capacity and low-latency front-haul system for small cells-based heterogeneous wireless networks. We experimentally demonstrate a proof-of-concept seamless convergence of radio-over-fiber (RoF) and millimeter-wave (MMW) system at 90 GHz for high-speed wireless signal transmission. Simultaneous transmission and demodulation of standard-compliant very-high-throughput WLAN IEEE 802.11ac and high-speed LTE-A signals over the system are successfully confirmed for the downlink direction. Satisfactory transmission performance over the converged 10-km RoF and a 5-m 90-GHz wireless link is achieved. The measured root-mean-square error vector magnitude is much better than the requirement defined by the standards.

An optical frequency-interleaving full-duplex technique for fiber-optic transmission of 96-GHz-band frequency-modulated continuous-wave downlink signal and 10-Gb/s on-off-keying uplink signal is newly proposed. The proposed full-duplexing technique with a flexible wavelength channel selector is experimentally demonstrated.

In addition to new radio technologies, end-to-end transport networks will play a vital role in future 5G (and beyond) networks. In particular, access transport networks connecting radio access with core networks are of critical importance. They should be able to support massive connectivity, super high data rates, and real time services in a ubiquitous environment. To attain these targets, transport networks should be constructed on the basis of a variety of technologies and methods, depending on application scenarios, geographical areas, and deployment models. In this paper, we present several technologies, including analog radio-over-fiber transmission, intermediate-frequency-over-fiber technology, radio-on-radio transmission, and the convergence of fiber and millimeter-wave systems, that can facilitate building such effective transport networks in many use cases. For each technology, we present the system concept, possible application cases, and some demonstration results. We also discuss potential standardization and development directions so that the proposed technologies can be widely used.

In this study, we successfully fabricated a W-band high-power photoreceiver with high output power and low power consumption. This W-band photoreceiver was integrated with a bias-free uni-travelling carrier photodetector (UTC-PD) and an InP high electron mobility transistor (PHEMT) amplifier for the first time. An ultrabroad 3 dB bandwidth beyond 110 GHz in an UTC-PD and maximum oscillation frequency of 320 GHz in a PHEMT low-noise amplifier were used for this hybrid integration. At 109 GHz, a high radio frequency output power of +10 dBm, high transimpedance gain of 828 boxed times, and low power consumption of 67 mW was achieved in an optical-electrical converting process.

300-GHz multilevel signal transmission over optical fibers and air is demonstrated using advanced optical communication technology including optical frequency comb generation. Local oscillator signal transport over optical fibers to optical-terahertz converters removes the need for setting any terahertzcapable oscillators in the converters. This fiber-remoted configuration with seamless conversion between the optical and terahertz signals is compatible with high-speed terahertz backhaul and fronthaul links.

This work reviews the latest advancements in coherent self-homodyne detection (SHD) using signals with polarizationor space-multiplexed pilot tones (PTs) originating from the same light source, towards the implementation of low-cost coherent receivers. The coherency between signals and PTs drastically reduces laser linewidth requirements, enabling the use of high-order modulation formats with low-cost DFB lasers. In this work, we revise the application of SHD in high-capacity space-division multiplexed links using multi-core fibers, outlining optical signal-to-noise ratio, skew and phase noise requirements of such systems. Furthermore, we evaluate the application of SHD for the implementation of laser-less optical network units in passive optical networks, as well as recent developments in digital SHD techniques.

An electro-optic (EO) modulator using multi patch antennas is proposed for broadband millimeter-wave bands in pico-cell radar networks. The proposed device is composed of multi patch antennas with a gap fabricated on a LiNbO3 crystal bonded with a low-k dielectric material. Multiple millimeter-wave operational frequencies can be received by the multi patch antennas and converting directly to lightwave signals through the Pockel effects of the LiNbO3 crystal. By adjusting the metal patch size for receiving with relatively close millimeter-wave frequencies, the bandwidth of the EO modulator can be enlarged. Based on that, bandwidth of over 30% in millimeter-wave bands can be achieved using the proposed device.

In this paper, we demonstrate a 300-GHz FM-CW radar using optical modulation technology. An optical frequency comb based on the optical modulation is utilized as a broadband frequency multiplier with a factor of 12. At a central frequency of 300 GHz, we generate a 12-GHz-bandwidth FM-CW signal with a pulse duration of 10 mu s, realizing a precise ranging with a resolution of several centimeters. We show that the optical frequency comb generator is capable of generating larger bandwidth FM-CW signals.

We successfully demonstrate 20-Gb/s quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) signal transmission. The transmission was carried out over endlessly single-mode holey fiber in the waveband of 1276.02-1304.26 nm, whose bandwidth of 5.09-THz is broader than the traditional C-band. A wavelength-tunable quantum dot (QD) laser with broad wavelength tunability helps realize bandwidth availability. A single InAs/InGaAs QD optical gainchip was grown using a sandwiched sub-nanometer separator technique in the wavelength of 1.3-mu m band. Using this gain chip, the QD light source has good wavelength stability, compactness and wavelength tunablility. The measured transmission results show bit error rates within a forward error correction limit of 2x10(-3) using intradyne coherent detection with offline digital signal processing. In this study, it is expected that abundant frequency resources such as the O-band are coherently enhanced by the use of a large number of wavelength channels by effectively using the QD-laser.
