  • Space Division Multiplexed Transmission of 109-Tb/s Data Signals Using Homogeneous Seven-Core Fiber

    We achieved record 109-Tb/s transmission over 16.8 km, using space division multiplexing (SDM) together with conventional multiplexing technology. 7-core SDM, 97 WDM (100-GHz spacing), 2 x 86 Gb/s PDM-QPSK signals were used. The spectral efficiency was 11.2 b/s/Hz. SDM transmission was realized using a multi-core fiber with ultra-low-crosstalk (less than -90.0 dB/km at 1550 nm) and high performance SDM MUX/DEMUX. The overall SDM crosstalk of -53 dB caused almost no penalty for the PDM-QPSK transmission.

    A method is proposed for measuring total chirp of integrated parallel Mach-Zehnder-type modulators by analyzing optical spectrum components. It can be applied to characterize the integrated modulators with finite extinction ratio and permit to evaluate the chirp parameter at a specific frequency. An experiment measurement is then conducted to demonstrate the proposed method for an optical FSK modulator. The obtained result reveals the effectiveness of this chirp measurement method.

    This paper describes a scenario of highly resilient mobile backhaul using the radio-over-fiber (RoF) technology. RoF-based millimeter-wave high-speed transmission is useful for quick recovery from severe physical damage of the network infrastructure. As a possible approach, we demonstrated polarization division multiplexing optical and 2x2 multi-input multi-output radio seamless hybrid downlink transmission over 20-km-long standard single mode fiber and 0.9-m free space with a digital signal processing technique for the 10-Gbaud QPSK format.

    We propose a millimeter-wave (MMW) coherent radio-over-fiber (RoF) transmission system for application to an access network with a direct broadband last-mile wireless connection to an optical fiber network. The coherent RoF system comprises an optical two-tone RoF signal generator with an advanced modulation format for high-throughput transmission and employs a digital-signal-processing-aided coherent detection technique for MMW radio, which is a technique similar to that of optical digital coherent detection. As proof of concept, a 20-GBd quadrature phase-shift keying RoF transmission over 20 km of optical fiber before a radio transmission over 20 m of air is demonstrated. The results of the radio transmissions using Cassegrain-type antenna pairs with a gain of 50 dBi are consistent with theoretical estimations
    this suggests the possibility of developing a midrange transmission system using a high-power MMW amplifier. © 2012 IEEE.

    We demonstrate W-band (75-110 GHz) RoF radio signal transmission with two free-running lasers using an optical heterodyne technique. The combination of a laser located at a base station for the optical local oscillator and a data-modulated optical signal from a central office provides a W-band radio signal. The carrier frequency offset fluctuation within 6 MHz can be mitigated by digital signal processing at the receiver side, in a similar manner to that of optical digital coherent detection. © 2012 IEEE.

    To realize a high-speed and high-capacity transmission link for fast mobile vehicles such as a bullet train, we propose a wavelength-division-muitiplexing radio-on-radio-over-fiber (WDM-RoRoF) system with a linearly located distributed antenna system (DAS) on the 90-GHz band. All the conventional microwave (MW) radio signals such as mobile telecommunication and broadcast signals are encapsulated in a single millimeter-wave (MMW) carrier radio. Centralized control at a central office using the information of the position of a car can optimize and distribute the suitable RoRoF signal to each remote cell over optical fibers. An optical two-tone generator with an optical modulator can easily generate a 90-GHz RoRoF signal, and then, a high-speed photomixer directly converts from an RoRoF signal to an MMW RoR signal, which is composed of an MW signal with a 90-GHz carrier component, for irradiation over air. Heterodyne frequency down-conversion performs the direct frequency conversion from the MMW signal to an MW signal available to consumers.

    We demonstrate 300-GHz-band radio transmission with a digital coherent detection technique. Quadrature-phase-shift-keying modulation can provide a data rate of 29.9 Gb/s, with 7% forward error correction overhead. A frequency-locked optical frequency comb for a 300-GHz radio-over-fiber signal can be generated by a recirculating frequency shifter with a single-sideband suppressed-carrier modulator in an amplified optical fiber loop.

    This presentation focuses on high-speed frequency control of radio-wave and lightwave signals using optical modulation. Frequency multiplication in optical modulators also plays important roles. Optical two-tone signals whose frequency separation can be up to 160 GHz would be useful for reference signals in array antennas, photodetector estimation, etc. In addition, this technique can be applicable for radar sensing, signal monitoring and performance diagnostics.

    Photonic transport systems in the C+L bands have been extensively employed in conventional networks. The continuously expanding demand for greater photonic network capacities has created the need for the use of additional wavebands to strengthen the transmission capacities. We recently focused on the use of a novel wavelength band such as 1.0-mu m (thousand band: T band), together with the conventional C and L bands, to enhance the usable optical frequency resources in future photonic networks employing waveband division multiplexing. Furthermore, we successfully demonstrated an ultra-broadband T-band photonic transport system using a holey fiber (HF) transmission line to create a wide range of usable optical frequency resources over 8.4 THz (wavelength range: 1037-1068 nm). In constructing an ultra-broadband photonic transport system for the T, C, and L bands, HF is considered to be a great candidate for an ultra-broadband and high-capacity data transmission line. In this study, we demonstrated a polarization division multiplexing (PDM) photonic transport system for doubling the optical frequency resources in the T band. Error-free PDM photonic transmissions in the T band with a clear eye opening at 10 Gb/s were successfully achieved over a long distance using an 11.4-km HF transmission line for the first time. To upgrade the present photonic network system, we believe the technologies of the demonstrated T-band PDM, together with WDM photonic transport systems using the >10-km long HF transmission line, represent a pioneering breakthrough in the use of ultra-broadband optical frequency resources.

    Coherent optical two-tone generation using an optical frequency comb generator based on an amplified optical fiber loop is successfully demonstrated. The observed phase noises in the 100-GHz band are less than -80 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz. This method is suitable for high-speed radio communication based on advanced modulation techniques.

    We investigate the performance of self-homodyne coherent system based on 19(star) SDM and 16(star) WDM channels. We show that self-homodyne detection, with pilot-tone transmitted on 1 MCF core, is compatible with SDM transmission systems but inter-core crosstalk can limit potential advantages.
