In this paper, major issues and solutions of a GaN based modified non-isolated integrated on-board charger
(IOBC) using a low value zero sequence inductance of traction motor and an inverter for class A and B segment electric vehicles (EV's) with dual power conversion stages are discussed. The major issues of cost and volume due to the presence of a high value of dc-link capacitor and an extra high current contactor
in the IOBC are highlighted and feasible hardware and control solutions are proposed. Another major issue concerning the safety issue of a non-isolated IOBC due to the presence of ground leakage current above the permissible standard limit is also brought out and feasible hardware solutions are proposed. The solutions to the issues of the modified IOBC configuration are verified from suitable simulation and experimental results. -

This paper presents a design study of a hybrid excitation flux switching generator (HEFSG) for micro hydroelectric power generation system installed in water supply facilities as a kind of renewable energy systems. Interior permanent magnet synchronous generators installed in current micro hydroelectric power generation systems may lack the power generation range in the low-speed and high-torque range, depending on the location and conditions where the systems are installed, resulting in the loss of power generation opportunities. In this research and development, HEFSG as a kind of variable flux machines is applied with the aim of realizing a micro hydroelectric power generation system that can be used in various occasions and conditions. Application-oriented optimum design of HEFSG under given design constraint and specifications using finite element electromagnetic analysis is conducted. The design results show that the designed HEFSG can expand the high torque operating range in low-speed region that meets for the target requirement.

Comparative Study on Insulation Lifetime of Stator Winding of Dual Inverter Fed Open Winding IPMSM and Single Inverter Fed Star-Connected IPMSM for EV Application 査読あり

In this paper, the turn-to-turn insulation lifetime of a dual inverter fed open winding interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (OWIPMSM) is compared with a conventional single inverter fed star-connected interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (SCIPMSM) for an EV traction application via an on-line experiment. A twisted pair coil (TP) is connected between the line-to-line terminal of windings of an OWIPMSM and a SCIPMSM without rotor and the effect of the line-to-line terminal surge voltage on the turn-to-turn insulation lifetime using the TP is investigated by generating PWM pulses at the inverter output identical to a variable load traction inverter drive. The turn-to-turn insulation life of the TP windings is approximately estimated by measuring the capacitance of the TP windings at regular time intervals during the on-line testing. Finally, experiment is carried out to detect the partial discharge in the TP windings and understand the physical relationship that exists between the total partial discharge count number and the decrease in capacitance of the TP windings after a specified time-period of insulation life testing. From the present preliminary insulation lifetime testing results using the TP, it is found that for motors with the same ratings, an OWIPMSM could be designed with a lower insulation level winding than the SCIPMSM for an EV traction application.

本論文では、Ene-1 Challenge と呼ばれるエコカーレース向けに、機械式固定子移動機構を採用した可変エアギャップ構造の可変磁束表面磁石形同期モータ (VFSPMSM) の動作範囲の改善とコギングトルクの低減に関する設計研究を紹介する。エコカーレースの用途では、与えられたバッテリー電圧と電流規制の下で、より広い動作範囲とより高い効率を備えた駆動モータを設計する必要がある。これらの要件を実現するために、VFSPMSMは機械式固定子移動機構に基づいて固定子と回転子間の軸方向の位置を適切に調整することにより、モータ速度に基づいて逆起電力定数を変更でき、その結果、界磁弱め制御なしでより広い動作速度範囲を得る。さらに、運転の快適さを確保するには、可能な限り低いコギングトルクを達成することが不可欠である。動作範囲の拡大のためのVFSPMSM の設計手順は、先行設計試作モータで見つかった問題に基づいて検討している。有限要素法に基づく設計とシミュレーション、および設計された弱め磁束制御を使用しないVFSPMSMの実験的な駆動性能評価を行った結果、動作範囲の拡張、モーター効率の向上、コギングトルクの最小化を実現している。

This paper presents an electric motor design for an electric taxiing system in aircraft. Electric motors for the electric taxiing system require high power density and high mechanical robustness of rotor. A hybrid excitation flux switching motor as a kind of variable flux motors is a good candidate because all active components such as permanent magnets and windings are located on the stator body essentially suitable for high speed rotation. An optimum design study on hybrid excitation flux switching motor is conducted based on finite element analysis using multi-objective genetic algorithm. For the design study, aluminum conductors for windings are introduced and a use of local non-magnetization technique for rotor electrical steel sheets are assumed to improve the power density and the rotor mechanical strength. Besides, the iron loss of rotor made of high-tensile electrical steel sheets is evaluated because an increase in iron loss is one of concerns with the high-tensile electrical steel sheets. The optimum design results based on finite element analysis show that both the power density with reduced rotor weight and the rotor mechanical stress using locally non-magnetized rotor high-tensile electrical steel sheets meet for the requirements.

This paper proposes an experimental procedure using a new experimental system for on-line insulation turn-to-turn life testing of a stator winding without a rotor of a permanent magnet synchronous motor. Without using any expensive large capacity dynamo set-up, the proposed system and procedure make it possible to test the insulation life of the stator winding under steady state operation of the motor even though at high temperatures of more than 200 °C. The line-to-line surge voltage applied to the motor under the inverter's PWM control at the running state of the motor is successfully replicated by the proposed static system. Suitable control blocks are given to describe the experimental procedure for an automotive traction application. In the new experimental set-up, a twisted pair (TP) winding is connected between the U-V phase of the stator phase windings. The turn-to-turn insulation life of the TP windings is approximately estimated by measuring the capacitance of the TP windings at regular time intervals during the on-line testing. Finally, an experiment is carried out to detect the partial discharge in the TP windings and understand the physical relationship that exists between the total partial discharge count number and the decrease in capacitance of the TP windings after a specified time-period of insulation life testing.

This paper presents design studies on a rotor for a high-speed homopolar type permanent magnet motor that can be applied to super chargers for automobiles, cordless stick vacuum cleaners and so forth. The stator comprises a core and a permanent magnet. The rotor is composed of only a core, resulting in enabling the removal of a retaining ring on the surface. Firstly, acceleration performance simulation using a prototype motor with a load blade was developed based on the data measured in an air compressor drive. Subsequently, the rotor shape design refinements based on three-dimensional (3D) finite element analysis were conducted to achieve the maximum torque and power required from a target application under a constraint of core stack length. The design refinement results proven by the acceleration performance of the developed simulation reveal that following the refinements to the rotor design, the homopolar type permanent magnet motor meets the requirement of the target application.

This paper focuses on a hybrid excitation flux switching motor (HEFSM) as one of the variable flux motors for EV/HEV propulsion. HEFSMs have the advantage in that all the active components are concentrated in the stator, which provides ease of cooling, whereas causes the drawback of being likely to occur severe magnetic saturation on the stator side. Therefore, a low L/D ratio, i.e., a flat aspect ratio, was selected, which offers a wide two-dimensional cross-section and mitigation of the magnetic saturation. In this paper, optimization of permanent magnet arrangement and grades under a low L/D ratio is addressed to enhance efficiency and power density over the entire speed range while satisfying design constraints and required performance for EV/HEV propulsion applications. The experimental verification shows that the motor efficiency of the newly designed HEFSM significantly exceeded that of the previously designed one, which reaches over 92% at the frequent operating point.

So far, vernier permanent-magnet machines (VPMs) are mostly applied in natural-cooling slow-speed applications, such as wind power generation, servo system, etc., which are designed with low current density and rotation speed. However, for high current density and rotation speed application, such as electric vehicle (EV) traction, the performances of VPMs are unknown. This paper will validate the feasibility of VPMs in EV traction application, and comparatively study the performances of high-current-density high-speed VPMs at different working conditions. These VPMs share the same stator core and winding, but with different rotor PM configurations, which include surface-mounted, embedded, V-shape and spoke-shape. Besides, the optimal VPM is also compared with a regular interior V-shape PM machine, which is commonly used in EV traction application. It shows that the VPM has higher torque density and efficiency, lower cogging torque and torque ripple than the regular PM machine.

Regular permanent magnet (PM) synchronous machines with Halbach arrays are mostly surface-mounted, which are only suitable for low-speed applications. In this paper, a PM synchronous machine with interior Halbach arrays is proposed for both low-speed and high-speed operations. The stator core and winding are the same with regular PM machines, while the key difference is the rotor PM structure, i.e. one PM pole is composed of two embedded PMs and a sandwiched spoke PM. The unique rotor configuration offers higher torque density, efficiency, overload and flux weakening capabilities than regular PM machines. Besides, in order to further reduce the torque ripple of the proposed PM machine with interior Halbach arrays, the rotor notching is introduced.

In this article, two double flux modulation permanent-magnet machines (DFMPMs) with PMs on both stator and rotor are introduced. The two DFMPMs share a similar operation principle. However, due to the different stator-PM arrangements, the two DFMPMs show different performances. In order to analyze their performance characteristics, their analytical models are built and verified by finite element analysis (FEA). Moreover, to quantitatively compare their electromagnetic performances more accurately, the two DFMPM topologies are optimized, respectively, and compared in terms of back-EMF, cogging torque,rated torque, torque ripple, power factor, and efficiency. Finally, the DFMPM topology with relatively better performances is built and tested. The experimental results match well with the FEA simulations.

Recently, the development of a premium class of electric vehicles (EVs) with high-power (250 kW) motor drive systems and high energy/high voltage (100 kWh/800 V) batteries has been the prominent focus of various automotive makers. Considering the drive system efficiency, motor acoustic noise, system fail-safe features, and cost, the dual inverter with a dual battery and an open-winding interior permanent magnet motor is considered to be a highly promising drive system configuration for premium class EVs. Therefore, considering the high drive system efficiency and low motor acoustic noise, the authors propose selecting different pulse width modulation (PWM) switching pattern modes in the frequent vehicle operating area based on the vehicle driving modes for the system configuration of premium class EVs. The authors performed suitable simulations and experiments with a 65kW motor drive system. The experimental results are validated to verify the effectiveness of selecting different PWM switching modes based on the vehicle driving pattern.

This paper presents multi-mode vibration suppression of electromechanical systems using a passive dynamic vibration absorber attached to a stator outer peripheral of an electric machine. The principle of vibration generation in an electric motor is explained. Subsequently, the structure and design procedure of passive dynamic vibration absorber for each vibration mode. The arrangement of these passive dynamic vibration absorbers on the stator periphery is then examined. Finally, the multi-mode vibration suppression effect is validated through hammering tests using a stator core with fabricated passive dynamic vibration absorbers attached.

This paper presents design study on a hybrid excitation machine as a generator for a micro-hydroelectric system. A hybrid excitation generator is a kind of variable flux machines and has two mmf sources such as a permanent magnet and the field excitation coil that enables to adjust a total amount of airgap field flux produced by two mmf sources. With the variable field flux capability, a hybrid excitation generator promises to expand high torque oper-ating range at low speed region while keeping operating power range at middle and high-speed region as required in the target application under given maximum voltage and current restrictions. Application-oriented design of hybrid excitation generator under given design constraints and specifications using finite element electromagnetic analysis is conducted. As a result, it is confirmed that the designed hybrid excitation generator meets the requirement for a target micro-hydroelectric system.

This paper proposes an evaluation model for PWM carrier loss in claw-pole machines employed for ISG applications under dual three-phase drive. The PWM carrier loss is evaluated based on PWM carrier voltage waveform and high-frequency impedance. The proposed model is composed of the equivalent circuit model that uses machine parameters measured from an actual machine, and PWM carrier loss is evaluated using the PWM carrier voltage waveform obtained from the proposed model and the measured high-frequency impedance. The validity of the proposed model is examined by comparing the model-based evaluation results with the experimental results.

This paper presents a design study on high-power density quasi-coreless permanent magnet synchronous motor for vehicle traction drives rotating at 50,000r/min as the maximum speed. Stator body is composed of carbon fiber rein-forced plastic, a small amount of soft magnetic composite core and aluminum windings. Rotor body consists of car-bon fiber reinforced plastic frame and polar anisotropic magnet. FEA-base feasibility study on the quasi-coreless motor with high power density and reduced losses are investigated, targeting the maximum speed of 50,000 r/min, the maximum power of 150 kW and the power density more than 10 kW/kg.

EV/PHEV battery charger from a household outlet with AC
100V/200V to the high voltage main battery with 350V. A typical isolated AC/DC converter consists of a PFC circuit and an isolated DC/DC converter. However, this configuration requires the 12-power semiconductor deceives, which is an obstacle to downsizing, cost reduction, and power conversion efficiency. Therefore, the authors integrate an isolated SEPIC circuit and a totem-pole PFC circuit. The number of power semiconductor devices is reduced from 12 to 6. In this paper, the operating principle of the proposed converter is firstly explained. Then, the circuit operation at 1kW output is verified in the experiment. -

A demand for high efficiency traction motors has been accelerated by the promotion of electrified vehicles, such as battery and fuel cell electric vehicles. As a part of development of the high efficiency traction motor, this paper reports a comparative study on two kinds of hybrid excitation flux switching motors (HEFSM) as a variable flux machine. One is the conventional HEFSM, which consists of a stator with constantly magnetized-permanent magnets, field excitation coils (FECs) and three-phase armature windings, and a rotor with salient poles like a switched reluctance motor. The other is a HEFSM employing variably magnetizable-permanent magnets (VM-PMs) that replace a part in the FEC slot area in the conventional one. Based on the variable magnetization nature of VM-PMs, the latter HEFSM promises that the replacement of magnetomotive force (mmf) of FECs with that of the VM-PMs makes the motor efficiency better at both low- and high-speed under the low-torque condition, that is, at both urban driving or highway cruising. To verify that, finite element analysis- (FEA)-based design simulations, as well as experimental performance evaluations for the two kinds of HEFSM, were conducted under reasonable dimensional and electrical constraints. As a result, it is shown that the latter HEFSM can achieve higher motor efficiency at the low-torque and high-speed region while keeping the motor efficiency at the low-torque and low-speed region.

This study was conducted to develop a design method of power density and efficiency maximization for three-phase pulse-width modulated (PWM) inverters that include AC filter. A tradeoff relationship exists between power density and efficiency. In general, increasing the switching frequency is known to increase the switching device loss and decrease the volume of the passive components. A three-phase PWM inverters design should consider the balance between conversion efficiency and inverter volume. However, best of our knowledge, no practical study has focused on the optimal design of a three-phase PWM inverter that includes an AC filter. This is because the iron loss of the AC filter inductor changes in complicated ways depending on the DC-bias excitation, amplitude of switching ripple current, etc. Therefore, the present authors clarified this iron loss mechanism and realized a highly accurate iron loss calculation method in previous studies. In this paper, the relationship between efficiency and volume for the switching frequency was analyzed when the AC filter inductor was designed for minimal loss by adjusting the core diameter, height, and number of winding turns. The efficiency and volume optimization achieved by designing a proper inductor was verified via comparison with a base design.

A premium class electric vehicle (EV) needs high
drive system efficiency, low motor noise and limp-home capability
of the traction drive when there is a component failure. A dual
inverter fed open winding interior permanent magnet
synchronous motor (DIF-OW-IPMSM) drive system satisfied all
the above needs. In this paper, a new algorithm of inverter open-
circuit fault diagnosis and fail-safe action strategy for the DIF-
OW-IPMSM drive system are proposed and presented to prove its
high reliability. The proposed new algorithm is verified by suitable
simulation and experimental results, and the safe limp-home
capability of the DIF-OW-IPMSM drive system is demonstrated. -

This paper focuses on a hybrid excitation flux switching motor (HEFSM) using variably magnetizable permanent magnets (VM-PMs) as variable flux motors for EV/HEV propulsion. The HEFSM makes an energization of field excitation coil unnecessary for most of the operating conditions so that it enlarges high efficiency operating area thanks to reductions of both copper and iron losses by adequately controlling magnetization state of the VM-PMs according to given operating conditions. In this paper, a new HEFSM design is proposed, which employs a novel PM arrangement as well as a flat motor shape with an optimum L/D ratio aiming at total PM usage reduction and the variable flux capability and maximum torque improvement. FEA-based simulation results show that the motor efficiency and variable flux capability of the proposed HEFSM are comparable with those of a previous PM-rich HEFSM while satisfying the target maximum torque and demagnetization tolerability of PMs under the total PM usage limitation.

This paper presents the magnetization state control of variably magnetizable-permanent magnets (VM-PM) - for a hybrid excitation flux switching motor (HEFSM) at the initial starting up. The HEFSM employing Nd-Fe-B type magnets with low coercive force as VM-PMs can achieve higher efficiency driving over the whole operating area compared with the conventional HEFSM without VM-PMs by appropriately adjusting the magnetization state according to a given operating condition. To put such the HEFSM into practical use for automotive traction applications, it is essential to be able to intentionally control the magnetization state by applying a pulsewise current to field excitation coil (FEC) during rotation as well as at starting up aiming at initialization of the magnetization state of VM-PMs. At first, a difference in the magnetization state controllability during middle-speed rotation and at a standstill and the angular dependence of the magnetizing magnetic field applied on VM-PM are investigated and discussed. Subsequently, the “quasi-impulse current train magnetization method” at starting up is proposed as a novel magnetization state control scheme. The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is experimentally verified using a 60kW test motor. As a result, it is revealed that the magnetization control at the starting up can be achieved similar to that during the middle-speed rotation.

In order to minimize torque ripple in a switched reluctance motor (SRM), various control methods have been proposed. One such method is current profiling control based on a mathematical motor model concerned with the relationship between torque position and current, which can be derived from measured magnetizing curves. However, current profiling control faces issues with an increase in torque ripple at the current overlapping region depending on the load condition. In this study, through magnetic analysis using 2D-FEA and mathematical analysis based on a test SRM (four-phase, 400W, and 8/6 pole configuration), the reason why the torque ripple increases is revealed, and a modified torque-position-current model considering mutual coupling is proposed for better control of torque ripple minimization. Experimental studies on torque ripple minimization using the test motor show that the proposed current profiling control offers better torque ripple control performance.

This paper presents MATLAB/Simulink based modeling and simulation of battery-powered electric vehicle (BEV) to estimate power consumption rate at development stage of a new electric motor. The model of BEV consists of not only the main power components such as a motor, an inverter and a battery, but also includes a driver, a controller and vehicle dynamics. In the model, a simple vehicle model based on Newtonian mechanics is constructed and it is possible to simulate the vehicle running by a motor using electricity obtained from a battery as a power source. JC08 mode as one of the driving pattern mode for evaluating the power consumption rate is used to determine the commanded values for the vehicle running. The power consumption rate is calculated from the distance and the power consumption of the battery. To demonstrate the validity
of the model, this paper deals with NISSAN LEAF EV specifications to compare power consumption rates. -

To realize an induction motor with high torque density for vehicle traction drives, this paper presents a design study on a multiphase pole-change induction motor (MPCIM). A principle of the pole-change is based on a harmonic operation of a multiphase inverter connected with the MPCIM where the multiphase windings are mesh-connected with a span. Major variables to be designed for the MPCIM are the phase number,the time harmonic order of phase current and the span. 2D-FEA based design investigations are conducted and conclude that the MPCIM with eight-phase winding of spanning with three and changing eight- and twelve-pole achieves high-torque density compete with an IPMSM installed on a commercialized EV.

The calculation of core loss of power electronics converters requires a large number of core loss data, including the excitation frequency, flux density ripple, and DC magnetic field bias characteristic under rectangular voltage excitation. However, in the case of the conventional method (that employs a B-H analyzer with a chopper circuit), a very long time is required to collect this core loss base data, because circuit parameter tuning is needed for each measurement point. Therefore, we propose a high-speed core loss base data collection method for core loss calculation under power electronics converter excitation. The core loss base data collection time was substantially reduced upon usage of a pulse width modulated (PWM) inverter and a neural network because various core loss characteristics were expressed upon excitation of the PWM inverter, and these core losses were learned by the neural network. The core loss base data, as measured via the proposed and conventional methods, were compared to validate the measurement accuracy of the proposed method, and the difference was found to be lesser than 12%. Thus, the proposed method achieves high-speed core loss base data collection.

This paper deals with a hybrid excitation flux
switching motor (HEFSM) employing a variably magnetizable permanent magnet as an automobile traction motor for a hybrid electric vehicle. Compared with the conventional HEFSM, a difference can be found on the stator body that newly utilizes the variably magnetizable permanent magnets adding to the
conventional parts such as laminated steel core, three-phase armature coils, field excitation coils and constantly magnetized permanent magnets. A basic concept to improve motor efficiency is based on replacing the mmf of field excitation coils with that of the variably magnetizable permanent magnets. The magnetizing state of the variably magnetizable permanent magnet is adjusted properly according to operating conditions, resulting in the copper loss and iron loss reductions. FEA-based design and
simulation as well as experimental test-based performance evaluation results of the proposed HEFSM show that the motor efficiencies under frequent operating conditions compete with those of the IPMSM installed on TOYOTA fourth-generation PRIUS. -

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors used in power electronics converters are a major factor that reduce the reliability of these devices. To evaluate the lifetime and reliability of this type of capacitors, capacitor loss needs to be evaluated under the excitation conditions of power electronics converters. However, the capacitor loss data provided by manufacturers is always measured under sinusoidal excitation. The authors therefore proposed a capacitor loss evaluation method for arbitrary excitation waveforms found in power electronics converters. This method features a simple configuration, and the capacitor loss can be practically evaluated using a function generator without the need of a real power electronics converter. Therefore, the capacitor loss can be analyzed under different conditions, ranging from fundamental analysis to practical analysis, for instance, pulse-width modulated (PWM) inverter excitation. In this study, the capacitor loss was evaluated using fundamental excitation and (PWM) inverter excitation. Moreover, the capacitor loss of four different type of capacitors was assessed. Under PWM inverter excitation, nonlinear loss behaviors were observed. Nonlinear loss characteristics could be expressed using a hysteresis curve in the Q-V plane. It was found that the hysteresis curves changed when the rectangular excitation current had zero current phases and different duty ratios due to the voltage unbalance of the tunnel pit capacitance in the capacitor sheets.

The authors propose a core loss calculation method for power electronics converter excitation from sinusoidal excited core loss data. This method is based on Brockmeyer’s theory and adapts to calculate core loss under DC-bias excitation conditions. Furthermore, the number of core loss test conditions are reduced as this method only requires the addition of DC-bias characteristics to the sinusoidal excitation core loss data provided by the core manufacturers. To validate the proposed method, the core losses under sinusoidal and square voltage excitations are first measured by a BH analyzer with a DC-bias excitation unit. Then, the measured values under a square voltage excitation and the calculated values from a sinusoidal excited core loss data are compared.

Design and experimental studies on a hybrid excitation flux switching motor as a traction motor for hybrid electric vehicles drive are presented. A stator body of the motor consists of not only laminated silicon-iron electromagnetic steel and three-phase armature windings, but also both of field excitation coils and permanent magnets working together as a variable field magnetomotive force source. On the other hand, a rotor is composed of just laminated silicon-iron electromagnetic steel with salient poles like switched reluctance motor. To bring out the best in drive performances of the hybrid excitation flux switching motor as a variable flux motor for the application, each material adopted for the stator and rotor body should be designed properly in terms of motor efficiency, maximum torque and power densities and so forth. As some of them, in this paper, thinner silicon-iron electromagnetic steel sheet and permanent magnets with high remanent and low amount of Dysprosium used are applied for achieving higher motor efficiency. Moreover, all coils wound flatwise and edgewise using rectangular wires are introduced to realizing high filling factor for reduced copper losses. Experimental tests using a 60kW prototype of the motor demonstrates the designed motor has good motor efficiency under frequent operating points expected for the target vehicle drive.

A main source producing noise and vibration in a switched reluctance motor is time variation of radial force acting on stator tooth during excitation period. Based on this principle, two different control are examined and compared in this paper. One is two-stage commutation method well-known as active vibration cancellation technique and the other is flux profiling control. The flux profiling control proposed in this study considers an increased degree of freedom of flux profile with superposition of lower order harmonics. The parameters for flux profile are optimized by genetic algorithm to minimize vibration and acoustic noise while keeping target torque and minimizing power loss as well as torque ripple. Experimental studies on drive performance comparisons under different control using 50kW three-phase 18/12 test motor are carried out. As a result, the proposed control employing the optimized flux profile works better than the conventional two stage commutation method in terms of higher motor efficiency, reduced noise and vibration, and less torque pulsation.

This paper presents an iron loss calculation method
for SiFe steel material under high-frequency current ripple due to PWM switching. The PWM switching produces dynamic minor loops on the BH plane, which cause iron loss. In this study, the improved ertotti's physical model is used for iron loss calculation for dynamic minor loops in SiFe steel material. The calculated iron loss values are compared with the measured iron loss values. The model predicts the iron loss within an acceptable error. However, calculation errors are found when comparing the iron loss value
for each dynamic minor loop. The reason for the calculation errors is that the measured iron loss varies if the flux density bias is different, even if the DC-bias has the same value. The calculation error occurs not only in the improved Bertotti's physical model but also in other methods such as improved Steinmetz equation because these methods do not take into account the flux density bias and/or the DC-bias characteristic. -

This paper presents an isolated step-sown DC-DC converter using GaN power device for automotive applications. The works for a power supply from a high voltage main battery with 200V to low voltage auxiliary battery with 13.6V in hybrid electric vehicle. A LLC converter is known as isolated DC-DC converter with high-efficiency. However, when input and/or output voltage considerably fluctuates, efficiency of a LLC resonant converter becomes worse. In order to solve this problem, a DC-DC boost-up converter to mitigate efficiency deterioration for the input and/or output voltage fluctuation is added to a LLC resonant converter. Generally speaking, an additional circuit, the boost-up chopper in this case, also deteriorates the total system efficiency. To avoid the efficiency degradation, discontinuous current mode control and GaN power devices are applied to the boost-up chopper. The DC-DC boost-up converter experimentally achieves 99.03% of conversion efficiency at nominal output so that it has no effect on the total system efficiency. Even though adding a DC-DC boost-up chopper to the LLC resonant converter, a power density expected to 10 W/cc.

In this paper, design and experimental studies on a hybrid excitation flux switching motor (HEFSM) are presented. The HEFSM, which has permanent magnets placed at middle of field coil slots on stator body and employs high filling factor windings to improve motor efficiency owing to copper loss reduction, is designed as a traction motor for hybrid electric vehicles. The maximum torque and power as the design target are set to be 207Nm and 60kW, respectively. From the viewpoints of the maximum torque/power capabilities and the motor efficiency, experimental test results using a prototype HEFSM are demonstrated and discussed.

For reducing the noise and vibration of switched
reluctance motor (SRM), many kinds of control methods have been proposed. 2-stage commutation method is one of effective method for active vibration cancellation (AVC). For proper operation of the 2-stage commutation method, there should be no vibration except for that at commutation. However, vibration is generally occurred at the point which commutation is not produced. Although 2-stage commutation method is used, it is difficult to reduce these vibration. In this study, through the electro-magnetic structural coupled analysis based on FEA for vibration and electromagnetic force in 4-phase 8/6 SRM, the reason why other vibration are occurred and the vibration
reduction based on the 2-stage commutation does not work are investigated. According to the nvestigations, a new design on the shape of rotor pole to reduce vibration and noise is proposed. Through simulation and experiment, the vibration and noise reduction are revealed. -

To eliminate position sensor from switched reluctance motor drive, many kinds of position estimation methods have been proposed. Most of them require current or voltage sensing to compute inductance or flux linkage, and data tables concerning with these parameters and rotor position. The current sensor is generally expensive. In addition, large amount of memory is necessary to save the data tables. To overcome these problems in this paper, a simple position estimation method using a gradient of distributed phase voltage obtained from voltage injection into SRM through full bridge bipolar type inverter is proposed. However, this method has estimation error at some position. To solve this problem, also novel method using voltage rates of distributed voltage are proposed. As a result, the position estimation with high resolution in wide speed range including standstill is possible. Through experiment using 400W four-phase 8/6 test motor, the effectiveness of proposed method is demonstrated.

In order to minimize torque ripple in switched reluctance motor (SRM), many kinds of methods have been proposed. One of them is current profile tracking control based on a motor model, torque-position-current model, which can be derived from magnetizing curves. However, the current profile tracking control has a problem which is an increase in torque ripple at the current overlapping region under high load condition. In this paper, through magnetic analyses using 2D-FEA and mathematical analyses regarding 4-phase 8/6 SRM, the reason of the increase in torque ripple is revealed and a novel torque- position-current model taking mutual coupling effect into account is proposed for better torque ripple minimization control.

Many kinds of commutation methods have been proposed to reduce the noise and vibration in a switched reluctance motor (SRM). One of these is well known as the two-stage commutation method. However, it has a defect that is principally revealed when an SRM is operated at high speed and under a high-load condition. This study investigated why vibration reduction based on two-stage commutation does not work through an electromagnetic-structural coupled analysis using a finite element method and mathematical analysis of the exciting force in a 0.4 kW four-phase 8/6 SRM. Based on the investigations, a modified method is proposed to reduce the vibration and noise independent of the operating condition. Experimental studies using the tested SRM demonstrated that the proposed modified control method could reduce the noise and vibration at high speed and under a high-load condition.

This paper presents design study on windage loss reduction for hybrid excitation flux switching motor employing two types of rotor structure. Conventional flux switching motors have a rotor structure with salient poles, by which windage loss at high speed region becomes serious. To reduce the windage loss, two types rotor are built: One is a cylindrical rotor employing iron rib between adjacent salient poles and shrouds placed at both ends in axial direction of rotor body and, the other is only employing the shrouds. Experimental tests using two machines combining with an existing stator and two rotors are conducted. As a result, the rotor with only the shrouds can greatly reduce the windage loss while keeping the maximum torque and power, and motor efficiency at high speed region as it is. From a viewpoint of windage loss reduction, different rotor configurations with and without the shroud are investigated by 3D-FEA based fluid analyses and discussed.

本論文では,比較対象機を2010年に米国で発売されたプリウス搭載のIPMSM[4]とする。その性能仕様である最大トルク207Nm-最大出力60kW-最高回転数13,500r/minを目標性能仕様とし,3D-FEAを用いて提案HEMの設計を行っている。目標仕様を達成する設計形状(初期設計形状)に対し,解析性能評価結果と試作製造制約を考慮した試作設計形状での変更点がモータ性能に与える影響を3D-FEAを用いて考察している。試作設計形状に基づいて製作した提案HEMの実験による性能評価試験結果を報告する。

This paper presents experimental studies on windage loss reduction using two types rotor for hybrid excitation flux switching motor that is intentionally designed so as to compete with an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor installed on TOYOTA PRIUS-2010. This machine makes it possible to vary its field flux by combining the two different mmf sources such as field excitation coils and permanent magnets. Generally, as hybrid excitation flux switching motors have a rotor with salient pole structure like a switched reluctance motor, a large amount of windage loss at high speed region damages motor efficiency. In this paper, two types of rotor, one with cylindrical shape and the other with covered by only shroud located at both axial end of rotor core are built and tested. Compare with a conventional salient pole rotor, it is found that the rotor with only shroud can dramatically reduce windage loss while keeping other drive performances as it is.

High torque density and robust rotor structure outer-rotor switched flux permanent magnet (SFPM) machine with DC excitation is proposed for emerging candidates to replace conventional electric motor of direct drive electric vehicle (EV). The extraordinary of DC excitation coil provides higher generated flux and flux control capability that suitable for various operating conditions. With the concept of motor housing inside the wheel, mechanical transmission as conventionally applied in centralized drive can be eliminated. In this paper, the proposed machine operating principle, predicted back electromagnetic force, cogging torque and torque production based on 2D-FEA are validated experimentally on the developed prototype. The results obtained show that there is good agreement between 2D-FEA and experiments.

This paper presents design studies on hybrid excitation flux switching motor (HEFSM) that can compete with an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) installed on TOYOTA PRIUS-2010. A stator of the HEFSM consists of not only laminated core and three-phase armature windings, but also field excitation coils and permanent magnets as field mmf sources. This machine makes it possible to vary its field flux by combining the two different mmf sources and thus, the name is capped by “hybrid excitation” as a variable field flux motor. The first trial manufacturing of HEFSM has been built for tests to assess its drive performances. Based on analysis of the test results, design refinements on the first test motor are ex-amined to make the second trial manufacturing. Various ex-perimental test results using the second test motor demon-strate that drive performances of the HEFSM are comparable to those of the PRIUS’s IPMSM.

This paper presents a study on a control strategy for active vibration cancellation (AVC) and noise reduction in switched reluctance (SR) motors. It has been revealed that two-stage commutation control based on the natural frequency of the stator body has been effective in suppressing the vibration occurring on the stator body at the commutation. According to some considerations on the generation mechanism of the vibration, a new AVC control for variable-speed SR motor drives under digital PWM control is proposed. Experimental studies using a 12-kW three-phase 12/8 SR motor demonstrate that the proposed two-step commutation control using negative voltage PWM is much effective as an AVC and noise reduction technique. Moreover, the proposed control is evaluated from the viewpoints of drive performances such as torque ripple and copper loss.

This paper presents a torque ripple reduction design of a concentrated-winding IPMSM with a new flux barrier for saliencybased
sensorless drives. The proposed IPMSM is designed for use in general-purpose sensorless industrial drives. In order to reduce

This paper presents an instantaneous current profile control of a four-phase switched reluctance (SR) motor for servo drive applications. Generally, a positioning controller for servo drives has torque and adjustable speed regulators as its inner loop. The proposed instantaneous current controller works as the torque regulator of the SR motor under low speed range less than 10% of rated speed on the assumption that it switches to or from different torque regulator beyond or within the threshold speed. It enables to suppress inherent torque ripple of SR motor and employs voltage PWM control with fixed switching frequency for tracking the instantaneous current profile with respect to given torque reference. Experimental studies using a 400W SR motor with four-phase 8/6 configuration demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed instantaneous current profile controller as the inner loop of positioning controller for servo drives.

This paper proposes a novel variable speed motor drive, wound field synchronous motor (WFSM) drive integrated with Z-source inverter (ZSI). The proposed WFSM is non-permanent magnet machine and employs two field coils as dc field mmf sources. On the other hand, ZSI has an impedance-network which is composed of two dc reactors and two capacitors. In the proposed drive, the two field coils of WFSM act not only as dc field mmf sources, but also as dc reactors in ZSI, resulting in size and cost reductions of the drive system. In order to achieve both the voltage boost-up and the field current controls simultaneously, its control algorithm is examined. Experimental results using a test drive system show that the proposed drive under the proposed control works properly.

This paper presents design studies on hybrid excitation flux switching motor (HEFSM) that can compete with an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) installed on TOYOTA PRIUS-2010. A stator of the HEFSM consists of not only laminated core and three-phase armature windings, but also field excitation coils and permanent magnets as field mmf sources. This machine makes it possible to vary its field flux by combining the two different mmf sources and thus, the name is capped by “hybrid excitation” as a variable field flux motor. The first trial manufacturing of HEFSM has been built for tests to assess its drive performances. Based on analysis of the test results, design refinements on the first test motor are ex-amined to make the second trial manufacturing. Various ex-perimental test results using the second test motor demon-strate that drive performances of the HEFSM are comparable to those of the PRIUS’s IPMSM.

This paper presents experimental studies on drive
performances of wound field synchronous motor (WFSM)
integrated with Z-source inverter (ZSI) system. WFSM is a nonpermanent
magnet machine and employs two field coils as dc
field mmf sources. The conventional WFSM drive uses a three
phase inverter for the armature windings and a dc chopper for
the field coils, separately. On the other hand, ZSI works as a
three phase inverter with a function of dc voltage boost-up by
using an impedance-network inserted between the DC-bus and
the three phase inverter. The impedance-network consists of two
dc reactors and two capacitors. The “integrated” means that in
the proposed drive system, two field coils of WFSM are employed
not only as dc field mmf sources for the motor, but also as dc
reactors for the impedance-network. Thus, the proposed system
eliminates the use of DC chopper, resulting in size and cost
reductions as the total drive system. The comparison of operable
range between the conventional system and the proposed system
through various experimental studies using a test drive system is
demonstrated and discussed. -

This paper presents experimental evaluations of
drive performances in high-speed range of a wound field
synchronous motor (WFSM) drive system integrated with a zsource
inverter (ZSI). The WFSM has two field coils as DC field
mmf sources instead of permanent magnets. On the other hand,
the ZSI employs an impedance-network that consists of two DC
reactors and two capacitors. A uniqueness of the proposed drive
system lies in that this system makes it possible to reduce size and
cost because the two DC reactors serve as both two field coils as
the DC field mmf sources in the WFSM and the DC boosting
reactors in the ZSI. The comparisons of drive performances in
high-speed range between the proposed integrated system and a
non-integrated system are experimentally demonstrated and
discussed. -

This paper presents a study on control strategy for active vibration cancellation and noise reduction in SR motor. It has been revealed that 2-stage commutation control based on natural frequency of stator body has been effective to suppress the vibration occurring on the stator body. According to some considerations on generation mechanism of the vibration, a new active vibration cancellation control for variable speed SR motor drive under digital PWM control is proposed. Experimental studies using 12kW three-phase 12/8 SR motor demonstrates that the proposed 2-step commutation control using negative voltage PWM is much effective as active vibration cancellation and noise reduction technique.

This paper proposes a novel variable speed motor drive, wound field synchronous motor (WFSM) drive integrated with Z-source inverter (ZSI). The proposed WFSM is non-permanent magnet machine and employs two field coils as dc field mmf sources. On the other hand, ZSI has an impedance-network which is composed of two dc reactors and two capacitors. In the proposed drive, the two field coils of WFSM act not only as dc field mmf sources, but also as dc reactors in ZSI, resulting in size and cost reductions of the drive system. In order to achieve both the voltage boost-up and the field current controls simultaneously, its control algorithm is examined. Simulation and experimental results show that the proposed drive under the proposed control works properly.

This paper presents drive performance comparisons among three-types of current profiling techniques minimizing torque ripple for switched reluctance (SR) motor in terms of current ripple, a number of switching of converter, motor efficiency and noise. As SR motors have strong magnetic nonlinearity, hysteresis current control is commonly used for their drives. In this case, however, switching frequency of converter should be set as high as possible in order to keep the resultant current ripple as small as possible. In contrast, the proposed current control employs feed-forward voltage control based on non-linear magnetizing curves model and is executed under conventional subharmonic PWM voltage control with fixed switching frequency. Experimental results using 400W 4-phase 8/6 SR motor demonstrate that the proposed current control can provide better drive performances than other hysteresis current control techniques.

This paper presents experimental drive performances evaluation of wound field flux switching motor for hybrid vehicle drive applications. A test machine with the maximum torque of 210 Nm and the maximum power of 123 kW expected at its design stage is built. A various experimental test result is demonstrated from viewpoints of the maximum torque and the maximum power capabilities and the motor efficiency up to its base speed of 6,000 r/min. As a result, it is confirmed that the test machine promises well as a machine with very high power density more than 4.2 kW/kg at the maximum power point under water jacket cooling.

This paper overviews recent trend of research and development of main traction motors for automotive application in Japan. The main traction motors must be with high torque and power densities, wider torque-speed operating range and high efficiency under frequent operating conditions. As high performance motor candidates, novel ones with variable machine constant employing a change of a number of turns and remnant of permanent magnet are proposed by many researchers. In other circumferences, many researchers also pay attentions to developments of non- or less-permanent magnet machines because of risks of cost-up and undersupply of rare-earth materials.

This paper proposes instantaneous current profile
tracking control for minimizing torque ripple of switched reluctance
motors. Because of its unique principle of torque generation
different from conventional AC motors, instantaneous current
profiling control is essential to regulate the torque with
ripple minimized. In addition, since its conventional motor model
in order to determine an adequate applied voltage reference is
established not yet, a hysteresis current regulator is generally
employed, in which it is rather difficult to design switching frequency
of converter. In the proposed scheme, the controller can
calculate the adequate applied voltage reference which can determined
based on the voltage equation derived from non-linear
magnetizing curve model. The applied voltage reference is realized
under conventional subharmonic PWM with a carrier frequency
of 12 KHz and fixed DC-voltage of 283V. The experimental
results using 400W test motor with 8/6 poles configuration
verify that the measured instantaneous current profiles well
follow the reference profiles. -

In this paper, precise pulsewise current drive for
switched reluctance motor under subharmonic PWM voltage
control is presented. Different from the conventional hysteresis
current control, sub-harmonic PWM scheme enables to design
switching frequency of converter. However, subharmonic PWM
voltage control requires adequate voltage references, that is,
PWM duty ratios according to given operating conditions. In the
proposed control, the adequate voltage references are calculated
from an analytical model of non-linear magnetizing curves of
target motor. Some experimental investigations using 20kW
SRM into drive performances under the proposed control are
made from the viewpoints of torque ripple and vibration. -

This paper presents the design of concentrated winding IPMSM under the saliency-based sensorless drive using a high-frequency signal injection. The finite element (FE) analysis is used to examine the feasible region of the sensorless drive in consideration of the cross-coupling magnetic saturation and the space harmonics. The reliability of the feasible region is verified by experiment using two prototypes. Then, the influence of the IPM motor geometry on the feasible region is examined. Consequently, the design guideline is established to obtain a suitable motor geometry which can maximize the torque capability and stability of the sensorless drive. Under the restricted specifications of dimensions and requirements, the 100Nm-10kW 12-pole-18slot IPMSM is optimally designed for HEV applications. The validity of the proposed design is verified using the MATLAB/SIMULINK based dynamic simulator

Generally, the sensorless control technique based on the high-frequency voltage signal injection method is used to detect the rotor position of an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) at the low-speed region. However, this technique does not work well at heavy load conditions, because the rotor incremental saliency decreases due to magnetic saturation. Here we present a high-frequency signal injection-based sensorless control approach, which is applicable over a wide range of torques. The proposed approach makes use of beneficial inductance phenomena appearing in the IPMSM under heavy load operations. The results of our experiments using a 36 kW-350 Nm IPMSM show that the proposed sensorless drive meets the requirements for the target HEV application.

We present the design of a saliency-based sensorless drive interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) for a traction drive in hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), and we introduce the sensorless safety operation region (SSOR), which accounts for cross-coupling magnetic saturation and harmonics of inductance distributions. The SSOR defines a working point under the maximum torque per ampere (MTPA) trajectory in which the motor can perform sensorless operation with a guaranteed performance in the steady state. The reliability of the SSOR was verified by experiments using two prototypes. The influence of the IPM motor geometry on the SSOR was then examined. Consequently, the design guidelines were established to obtain a suitable motor geometry that can maximize the torque capability and the stability during the sensorless drive. Under the restricted specifications of dimensions and requirements, the 100 Nm-10 kW 12-pole, 18-slot IPMSM is optimally designed for the target traction drive in HEVs. The validity of the proposed design was verified using a MATLAB/SIMULINK-based dynamic simulator.

This paper presents design study, optimization and performance analysis of wound field flux switching machine with non-rare-earth magnet for hybrid electric vehicle drive applications. The stator of proposed machine consists of iron core made of electromagnetic steels, armature coils and field excitation coils as the only field mmf source. The rotor is composed of only stack of iron and hence, it is robust and suitable for high speed operation. The design target is a machine with the maximum torque and power density, and the maximum speed more than 210Nm and 3.5kW/kg, and 20,000r/min, respectively, which competes with interior permanent magnet synchronous machine used in an existing hybrid electric vehicle. Deterministic optimization method is applied to design the proposed machine until the target performances are achieved. Some experimental studies using a prototype of the finally designed machine are demonstrated to validate the effectiveness of the proposed machine.

This paper presents an investigation into design possibility of 6-slot 5-pole PMFSM with hybrid excitation for traction drives in HEVs. An improved design is examined to gain a better performance in its maximum torque and power production. The final designed machine enables to keep much power density compared to existing IPMSM installed on the commercial SUV-HEV.

This paper deals with a 6-slot-8-pole hybrid excitation flux switching machine, in which both permanent magnets and wound field excitation are employed as magnetomotive force sources. This machine has all active parts on the stator body and a rugged rotor structure similar to that of swicthed reluctance motor suitable for high-speed operation. Some design parameter refinments are conducted to the machine in order to evaluate maximum torque capability and maximum power density as much as possible under given design requirement and constraints. As a result, it is demonstaated that the machine desgined becomes a good candidate for the target HEV drive application.

Over the past decade, many automotive companies have been commercializing HEVs. Most of them employ interior permanent magnet synchronous machine (IPMSM) using rare-earth magnet as their main traction drives from viewpoints of high torque and power density and high efficiency over most of operating torque-speed ranges. However, since all permanent magnets (PMs) are located on rotor part, a design approach to ensure mechanical strength of the rotor depends on rib thickness and number of bridges between PMs. The increase in the number of bridges improves the mechanical strength, but reduces the maximum torque of the machine due to an increase in leakage flux of PM. To overcome this problem, 6S-8P permanent magnet flux switching machine with additional field excitation coil is presented. The proposed machine has all active parts on the stator body and a rugged rotor structure suitable for high speed operation. Some design parameter refinements are conducted to this machine in order to elevate maximum torque and maximum power densities. As a result, it is shown that the proposed machine after the design refinements becomes a good candidate for target HEV drive applications.

This paper presents a new structure of 12Slot-10Pole field-excitation flux switching synchronous machine (FEFSSM) with all active parts namely field excitation coil (FEC) and armature coil are located on the stator, applied for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). The rotor part consists of single piece iron makes it more robust and becoming more suitable to apply for high speed motor drive system application coupled with reduction gear. The design target is the motor with a maximum torque of 210Nm with reduction gear ratio of 4:1, a maximum power of 123kW, a maximum power density more than 3.5kW/kg, and a maximum speed of 20, 000r/min with similar restrictions and specifications in IPMSM used for LEXUS RX400h. The deterministic design optimization approach is used to treat design parameters defined in rotor, armature and FEC repeatedly until the target performances are achieved, under maximum current density 21A/mm2 for both armature and FEC. A result shows that the proposed design enables to keep the same power density in existing IPMSM installed on a commercial SUV-HEV.

Hybrid excitation machines (HEMs) that consist of permanent magnet (PM) and field excitation coil (FEC) as their main flux sources has several attractive features compared to interior permanent magnet synchronous machines (IPMSM) conventionally employed in hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). Among various types of HEM, the machine with both permanent magnet and field excitation coil located on the stator has the advantage of robust rotor structure similar as switch reluctance machine (SRM). In addition, the variable flux control capabilities from field excitation coil make this machine becoming more attractive to be applied for high-speed motor drive systems, coupled with reduction gear. This HEM can be categorized as hybrid excitation flux switching synchronous machine (HEFSSM). In this paper, a novel 12Slot-10Pole HEFSSM where the field excitation coil is wounded in radial direction in the stator is proposed for traction drives in HEVs. The design target of the proposed machine is a maximum torque of 210Nm with reduction gear ratio of 4:1, a maximum power of 123kW, a maximum power density more than 3.5kW/kg, and a maximum speed of 20,000r/min with similar restrictions and specifications in IPMSM used for LEXUS RX400h. The deterministic design optimization method based on 2D-FEA is used to treat design parameters defined in rotor, armature coil slot and field excitation coil slot until the target performances are achieved, under maximum current density condition for both armature coil and field excitation coil. The final results show that the final design HEFSSM is able to keep the same torque density in existing IPMSM installed on a commercial SUV-HEV.

This paper presents detailed design studies of the proposed permanent magnet hybrid excitation motor (HEM) for high-speed main spindle drive in machine tools based on results obtained from experiment using prototype motor. The proposed HEM has been intentionally designed using 3D-FEA for the target application. Although the basic working principle of HEM has been proven by the experimental results, the induced voltage waveforms measured have shown a large deviation from those computed by 3D-FEA due to 5th harmonics. This has been a primary factor which has degraded the drive performances of test machine. After checking the differences between the designed drawing and real prototype motor, design studies are conducted to the tested HEM using 3D-FEA. As a result, the stator parameters such as, the stator pole shoe arc angle, the stator teeth, are studied for relatively good agreement with the tested results.

This paper presents design analysis and improvement of the proposed high speed hybrid excitation motor (HEM) for main spindle drive in machine tools based on experimental results obtained using prototype motor. The proposed HEM is intentionally designed using 3D-FEA for target application taking into account of practical design constraints. The basic working principle and the unique field weakening control method of the proposed HEM are studied from the prototype machine. The influence of manufacturing constraints in the design parameters of the motor are studied carefully and an improved design of the proposed HEM is analyzed. This paper presents feasibility studies on hybrid excitation motor (HEM) as a candidate of less rare earth permanent magnet and high power density machine for hybrid electric vehicle drives. The construction, the basic working principle focusing on variable field control capability and the design concept of HEM are overviewed. After making the design restrictions and specifications clear, the drive performances of HEM designed are evaluated based on 3D-FEA. As a result, the proposed motor makes possible to reduce the volume of rare permanent magnet by approximately half of that used in existing interior permanent magnet synchronous motor for LEXUS RX400h while keeping the power density intact. With comparisons between the measured and the computed drive performances of the trial manufacturing of the downsized motor, it is verified that HEM becomes an attractive candidate as a less-rare-earth permanent magnet and high power density motor for HEV drives.

Hybrid excitation flux switching synchronous machine (HEFSSM) has several attractive features compared to interior permanent magnet synchronous machines (IPMSM) conventionally employed in hybrid electric vehicles (HEV). Among various types of HEFSSM, the machine with both permanent magnet (PM) and field excitation coil (FEC) on the stator has the advantages of robust rotor structure together with variable flux control capabilities that make this machine becoming more attractive to apply for high-speed motor drive systems. This paper presents an investigation into the design possibility and parameter optimization study of 12Slot-10Pole HEFSSM for traction drives in HEV The research target is to design a machine with reduced amount of rare-earth magnet, a maximum torque of 210Nm, a maximum power of more than 123kW, and a maximum power density of more than 3.5kW/kg. Extensions in speed and torque ranges are chosen for optimization aims. The deterministic design approach is used to treat ten design parameters in an effort to achieve the target performances. As a result, the designed HEFSSM with 0.4kg PM is able to get much higher power density compared to existing IPMSM installed on a commercial SUV-HEV.
