    In this paper, major issues and solutions of a GaN based modified non-isolated integrated on-board charger
    (IOBC) using a low value zero sequence inductance of traction motor and an inverter for class A and B segment electric vehicles (EV's) with dual power conversion stages are discussed. The major issues of cost and volume due to the presence of a high value of dc-link capacitor and an extra high current contactor
    in the IOBC are highlighted and feasible hardware and control solutions are proposed. Another major issue concerning the safety issue of a non-isolated IOBC due to the presence of ground leakage current above the permissible standard limit is also brought out and feasible hardware solutions are proposed. The solutions to the issues of the modified IOBC configuration are verified from suitable simulation and experimental results.

    This paper presents a design study of a hybrid excitation flux switching generator (HEFSG) for micro hydroelectric power generation system installed in water supply facilities as a kind of renewable energy systems. Interior permanent magnet synchronous generators installed in current micro hydroelectric power generation systems may lack the power generation range in the low-speed and high-torque range, depending on the location and conditions where the systems are installed, resulting in the loss of power generation opportunities. In this research and development, HEFSG as a kind of variable flux machines is applied with the aim of realizing a micro hydroelectric power generation system that can be used in various occasions and conditions. Application-oriented optimum design of HEFSG under given design constraint and specifications using finite element electromagnetic analysis is conducted. The design results show that the designed HEFSG can expand the high torque operating range in low-speed region that meets for the target requirement.

    In this paper, the turn-to-turn insulation lifetime of a dual inverter fed open winding interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (OWIPMSM) is compared with a conventional single inverter fed star-connected interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (SCIPMSM) for an EV traction application via an on-line experiment. A twisted pair coil (TP) is connected between the line-to-line terminal of windings of an OWIPMSM and a SCIPMSM without rotor and the effect of the line-to-line terminal surge voltage on the turn-to-turn insulation lifetime using the TP is investigated by generating PWM pulses at the inverter output identical to a variable load traction inverter drive. The turn-to-turn insulation life of the TP windings is approximately estimated by measuring the capacitance of the TP windings at regular time intervals during the on-line testing. Finally, experiment is carried out to detect the partial discharge in the TP windings and understand the physical relationship that exists between the total partial discharge count number and the decrease in capacitance of the TP windings after a specified time-period of insulation life testing. From the present preliminary insulation lifetime testing results using the TP, it is found that for motors with the same ratings, an OWIPMSM could be designed with a lower insulation level winding than the SCIPMSM for an EV traction application.

    本論文では、Ene-1 Challenge と呼ばれるエコカーレース向けに、機械式固定子移動機構を採用した可変エアギャップ構造の可変磁束表面磁石形同期モータ (VFSPMSM) の動作範囲の改善とコギングトルクの低減に関する設計研究を紹介する。エコカーレースの用途では、与えられたバッテリー電圧と電流規制の下で、より広い動作範囲とより高い効率を備えた駆動モータを設計する必要がある。これらの要件を実現するために、VFSPMSMは機械式固定子移動機構に基づいて固定子と回転子間の軸方向の位置を適切に調整することにより、モータ速度に基づいて逆起電力定数を変更でき、その結果、界磁弱め制御なしでより広い動作速度範囲を得る。さらに、運転の快適さを確保するには、可能な限り低いコギングトルクを達成することが不可欠である。動作範囲の拡大のためのVFSPMSM の設計手順は、先行設計試作モータで見つかった問題に基づいて検討している。有限要素法に基づく設計とシミュレーション、および設計された弱め磁束制御を使用しないVFSPMSMの実験的な駆動性能評価を行った結果、動作範囲の拡張、モーター効率の向上、コギングトルクの最小化を実現している。

    This paper presents an electric motor design for an electric taxiing system in aircraft. Electric motors for the electric taxiing system require high power density and high mechanical robustness of rotor. A hybrid excitation flux switching motor as a kind of variable flux motors is a good candidate because all active components such as permanent magnets and windings are located on the stator body essentially suitable for high speed rotation. An optimum design study on hybrid excitation flux switching motor is conducted based on finite element analysis using multi-objective genetic algorithm. For the design study, aluminum conductors for windings are introduced and a use of local non-magnetization technique for rotor electrical steel sheets are assumed to improve the power density and the rotor mechanical strength. Besides, the iron loss of rotor made of high-tensile electrical steel sheets is evaluated because an increase in iron loss is one of concerns with the high-tensile electrical steel sheets. The optimum design results based on finite element analysis show that both the power density with reduced rotor weight and the rotor mechanical stress using locally non-magnetized rotor high-tensile electrical steel sheets meet for the requirements.

    This paper proposes an experimental procedure using a new experimental system for on-line insulation turn-to-turn life testing of a stator winding without a rotor of a permanent magnet synchronous motor. Without using any expensive large capacity dynamo set-up, the proposed system and procedure make it possible to test the insulation life of the stator winding under steady state operation of the motor even though at high temperatures of more than 200 °C. The line-to-line surge voltage applied to the motor under the inverter's PWM control at the running state of the motor is successfully replicated by the proposed static system. Suitable control blocks are given to describe the experimental procedure for an automotive traction application. In the new experimental set-up, a twisted pair (TP) winding is connected between the U-V phase of the stator phase windings. The turn-to-turn insulation life of the TP windings is approximately estimated by measuring the capacitance of the TP windings at regular time intervals during the on-line testing. Finally, an experiment is carried out to detect the partial discharge in the TP windings and understand the physical relationship that exists between the total partial discharge count number and the decrease in capacitance of the TP windings after a specified time-period of insulation life testing.

    This paper presents design studies on a rotor for a high-speed homopolar type permanent magnet motor that can be applied to super chargers for automobiles, cordless stick vacuum cleaners and so forth. The stator comprises a core and a permanent magnet. The rotor is composed of only a core, resulting in enabling the removal of a retaining ring on the surface. Firstly, acceleration performance simulation using a prototype motor with a load blade was developed based on the data measured in an air compressor drive. Subsequently, the rotor shape design refinements based on three-dimensional (3D) finite element analysis were conducted to achieve the maximum torque and power required from a target application under a constraint of core stack length. The design refinement results proven by the acceleration performance of the developed simulation reveal that following the refinements to the rotor design, the homopolar type permanent magnet motor meets the requirement of the target application.

    This paper focuses on a hybrid excitation flux switching motor (HEFSM) as one of the variable flux motors for EV/HEV propulsion. HEFSMs have the advantage in that all the active components are concentrated in the stator, which provides ease of cooling, whereas causes the drawback of being likely to occur severe magnetic saturation on the stator side. Therefore, a low L/D ratio, i.e., a flat aspect ratio, was selected, which offers a wide two-dimensional cross-section and mitigation of the magnetic saturation. In this paper, optimization of permanent magnet arrangement and grades under a low L/D ratio is addressed to enhance efficiency and power density over the entire speed range while satisfying design constraints and required performance for EV/HEV propulsion applications. The experimental verification shows that the motor efficiency of the newly designed HEFSM significantly exceeded that of the previously designed one, which reaches over 92% at the frequent operating point.

    So far, vernier permanent-magnet machines (VPMs) are mostly applied in natural-cooling slow-speed applications, such as wind power generation, servo system, etc., which are designed with low current density and rotation speed. However, for high current density and rotation speed application, such as electric vehicle (EV) traction, the performances of VPMs are unknown. This paper will validate the feasibility of VPMs in EV traction application, and comparatively study the performances of high-current-density high-speed VPMs at different working conditions. These VPMs share the same stator core and winding, but with different rotor PM configurations, which include surface-mounted, embedded, V-shape and spoke-shape. Besides, the optimal VPM is also compared with a regular interior V-shape PM machine, which is commonly used in EV traction application. It shows that the VPM has higher torque density and efficiency, lower cogging torque and torque ripple than the regular PM machine.

    Regular permanent magnet (PM) synchronous machines with Halbach arrays are mostly surface-mounted, which are only suitable for low-speed applications. In this paper, a PM synchronous machine with interior Halbach arrays is proposed for both low-speed and high-speed operations. The stator core and winding are the same with regular PM machines, while the key difference is the rotor PM structure, i.e. one PM pole is composed of two embedded PMs and a sandwiched spoke PM. The unique rotor configuration offers higher torque density, efficiency, overload and flux weakening capabilities than regular PM machines. Besides, in order to further reduce the torque ripple of the proposed PM machine with interior Halbach arrays, the rotor notching is introduced.

    In this article, two double flux modulation permanent-magnet machines (DFMPMs) with PMs on both stator and rotor are introduced. The two DFMPMs share a similar operation principle. However, due to the different stator-PM arrangements, the two DFMPMs show different performances. In order to analyze their performance characteristics, their analytical models are built and verified by finite element analysis (FEA). Moreover, to quantitatively compare their electromagnetic performances more accurately, the two DFMPM topologies are optimized, respectively, and compared in terms of back-EMF, cogging torque,rated torque, torque ripple, power factor, and efficiency. Finally, the DFMPM topology with relatively better performances is built and tested. The experimental results match well with the FEA simulations.

    Recently, the development of a premium class of electric vehicles (EVs) with high-power (250 kW) motor drive systems and high energy/high voltage (100 kWh/800 V) batteries has been the prominent focus of various automotive makers. Considering the drive system efficiency, motor acoustic noise, system fail-safe features, and cost, the dual inverter with a dual battery and an open-winding interior permanent magnet motor is considered to be a highly promising drive system configuration for premium class EVs. Therefore, considering the high drive system efficiency and low motor acoustic noise, the authors propose selecting different pulse width modulation (PWM) switching pattern modes in the frequent vehicle operating area based on the vehicle driving modes for the system configuration of premium class EVs. The authors performed suitable simulations and experiments with a 65kW motor drive system. The experimental results are validated to verify the effectiveness of selecting different PWM switching modes based on the vehicle driving pattern.
