マリー・キュリーは、1914年から34年まで、最先端の科学研究所の所長である世界で唯一の女性科学者だった。彼女が所長を務めるラジウム研究所には多数の女性科学者が所属し、ここは科学研究のみならず、男女共同参画という意味でも、世界でトップクラスの研究所であった。しかしこの事実はあまり知られておらず、キュリーの女弟子の業績については先行研究も少ない。本研究はここから巣立った多くの優秀な女性科学者の研究を通して、科学における男女共同参画について考察する試みである。

女性初のノーベル賞受者であり、放射能現象の解明者で、放射性新元素ポロニウムとラジウムの発見者であるマリー・キュリーは、その傑出した業績により、世界中の科学アカデミー会員となっていた。ところがキュリーが本拠地としたフランスの最高権威、パリの科学アカデミーは彼女を会員とするのをこばんだのである。本研究は、キュリーの科学アカデミー立候補から落選に至る過程を、とくに当時のマスコミ報道を分析することで、そこにいかにジェンダーや民族、宗教の問題が関係し、肝心の科学については問題にされなかったかを明らかにする試みである。

欧米の啓蒙時代には、科学アカデミーが百花繚乱のように設立され、どの国も地域も、実用と教養の両方から、自分たちの住む地域の学芸の発展をめざした。しかしこれらあまたの科学アカデミーには女性の会員は数えるほどしか存在しない。「女性の世紀」との称された18世紀において、これはいかなる理由なのか。本研究は、これらの科学アカデミーと当時の女性科学啓蒙家や科学研究者がどのような関係にあったのかを、ジェンダーの視点から探る試みである。

18世紀の西欧は、「女性の世紀」と呼ばれたほどに、20世紀以降を除いては各方面において女性の活躍が目立った世紀ではあったが、科学においても例外ではない。しかしその内実は詳しく研究されておらず、ましてや日本ではほとんど知られていない。本研究はこの18世紀西欧において、近代科学の研究や啓蒙にかかわった女性たちのキャリアを通して、当時のジェンダー問題について考察するものである。
