This paper discusses Japanese students' learning style of English by reviewing the author's presentation classes in 2017. The mainstream of Japanese education is still a passive one: Students learn while taking notes and study for writing or listening exams. This leaning style of English seems to be affected by Japanese language with lots of Kanji characters. Students tend to memorize each word of English by associating its meaning, just like memorizing a Kanji character.
This kind of learning style is suitable for mulling over an idea, but not really for transmitting ideas. In fact, students have few opportunities of training for their clear voice. Their postures are not prepared for speaking.
Therefore, it should be effective to focus on their physical properties, postures, to make their speech clear in English classes at the university level. In order to do this, presentation classes in English must be effective, and in those classes teachers should observe their students' postural habits and give appropriate feedback with various cues. -
