    In the present study, Al 1070 alloy pins were processed via micro/meso-scale equal channel angular pressing (channel diameter 1.5 mm, the smallest channel diameter has ever been achieved in mesoscale), up to four passes at room temperature. The microstructure characteristics, i.e., grain size, and misorientation angle distributions were analyzed by high-resolution electron backscatter diffraction on the transverse plane for the ECAPed samples. Tensile properties for such small processed pins were measured by constructed micro/meso-scale tensile machine. The gauge length and the gauge diameter were 2 mm and 1.5 mm, respectively. After the fourth ECAP pass, the results revealed that the microstructure was refined remarkably from 15.5 μm (the initial undeformed sample) to nearly 1.9 μm due to the gradual transformation of the low-angle grain boundaries into high-angle grain boundaries as a result of the occurrence of grain subdivision. Micro/meso-scale ECAP does a significant enhancement in the ultimate tensile strength by 63%, whereas the ductility decreased after the fourth ECAP pass by 47.3% and this is supposed to be ascribed to the continuous decrease in subgrain size. The above results prove that the ECAP process has the potential for obtaining fine grains and improving material tensile properties even in micro/meso-scale.

    Commercially AA1070 aluminium was processed by micro/mesoscale equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) up to four passes, via route BC, to achieve fine grain structure and thereby enhancing the mechanical properties. Subsequently, the samples subjected to ECAP processing underwent an extrusion deformation in micro/mesoscale. The microstructural evolution of the deformed structures was followed using electron backscatter diffraction. The findings confirm that a remarkable refinement in the grain structure was observed as a result of the gradual transformation of the low angle grain boundaries into high angle grain boundaries through the grain subdivision mechanism. Consequently, a substantial improvement of the mechanical properties of the extruded material is promoted compared to the samples subjected to ECAP processing.

    The Micro/meso-forming of commercially pure aluminum, AA1070, processed at room temperature by equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) with a die channel angle of 90° through 4 deformation passes has been conducted. Microstructure features, such as grain size, misorientation angle distributions and the developed texture during the four deformation passes of micro/meso-ECAP have been investigated by Electron backscattering diffraction (EBSD) technique. Then, hardness measurements over the cross-section of the processed samples were correlated with the EBSD analysis. EBSD scans revealed that extended shear bands are formed and represent the microstructural feature induced during micro/meso-forming. Whereas, a non-uniform grain structure consisting of intensive low-angle grain boundaries was obtained in the first pass, a uniform ultrafine-grained structure of high-angle grain boundaries (in the range of 1–2 μm) was achieved at the fourth pass. Consequently, a significant improvement in the hardness value to 65.3%, with respect to the starting material, was achieved due to the enhancement of the fine grain structure. The texture analysis exhibited that the high plastic shear strain associated with micro/meso-scale ECAP was capable to develop a weak texture in the flow plane compared to the starting texture.

    Information about distribution and change in friction during forming is required to construct a prediction model. The small deflection of a thin part fabricated at the other side of a flat tool surface is detected using laser reflection to decompose the normal and horizontal (frictional) forces. The locus of laser reflection on a detector showed both components. The values estimated from the locus were fairly close to the measured forces.
