Hard coatings with less adhesion are required in forming field. Interfacial phenomena between tool and material during forming are difficult to be observed. Therefore, an atomistic-calculation analysis of the interaction between heterogeneous atoms, derived from first-principles electronic-state calculations, has proposed. In the case of TiN coated surface, Ti-Al, N-Al potentials were derived. The Al-Al potential for the Al atoms close to the TiN surface was also extracted. Using the derived interatomic potentials, a molecular dynamics calculation simulating a kind of ironing-type forming process was carried out. The change in number and arrangement of the adhered atoms during ironing were compared with each other in the three (TiN, VC, CrN) ceramic coatings.

Micro/meso-scale metal forming treats the size effects in forming of small-sized metal parts such as the anisotropy in plastic deformation and nonuniform and nonconstant in friction between the material and the tool. The anisotropy in plastic deformation is discussed by comparing the result of an ECAP (equal-channel angular pressing) process with the calculated results of an FEM considering crystal plasticity. The change in friction is measured by using a direct-measurement apparatus during forming.
