Millimeter-wave Butler Matrix Beamforming Circuit using Finline in Double-layer Dielectric Substrate Reviewed International journal
IEEE Open Journal of Antennas and Propagation 1 579 - 589 2020.10
Language:English Publishing type:Research paper (scientific journal) Publisher:IEEE
This article presents a new kind of finline in double-layer dielectric substrate and its beamforming circuit of Butler matrix in the millimeter-wave band. The finline is constructed by inserting a slotline between two dielectric substrate layers. In this configuration, it is bounded within a closed structure composed of a double-layer dielectric substrate and two rows of via-hole arrangement, contributing to low dispersion and low radiation loss of the finline characteristics. The proposed finline design aims to provide a low-complexity and low-loss transmission line which is applied to the Butler matrix design. A 4 x 4 Butler matrix for 4 switchable beams is realized by using the finline in the double-layer dielectric substrate. In addition, a waveguide-to-finline transition is developed as a feeding circuit for the Butler matrix. Characteristics of the proposed transition and the Butler matrix were analyzed by electromagnetic analysis of the finite element method and demonstrated by experiments at 79 GHz. The proposed Butler matrix obtains a wideband characteristic and an acceptable insertion loss of 2.42 dB. The array factor which is calculated from the measured amplitude and phase outputs 4 switchable beams with the beam directions of +14 deg., -46.5 deg., +46.5 deg. and -14 deg., respectively. The proposed beamforming circuit using finline in double-layer dielectric substrate would be attractive for millimeter-wave applications due to its performance and low cost.

A topside waveguide-to-microstrip transition whose waveguide sits on the top of the substrate was developed in the millimeter-wave band. A double-layer substrate was attached at the WR-10 waveguide end. A coupling patch is located on the top surface with spacing of the upper substrate thickness from the microstrip signal line patterned between the upper and the lower substrates. The transmission characteristics of the transition are controlled by the dimensions of the coupling patch and the insertion length of the microstrip signal line into the waveguide. All the dimensions of the transition were optimized by electromagnetic analysis of the finite-element method at 76.5 GHz. The feasibility was confirmed by experiments in this letter.

Low profile and simple configuration are advantageous for RF module in passive millimeter-wave imaging system. High sensitivity over broad operation bandwidth is also necessary to detect right information from weak signal. We propose a broadband layer-structured module with low profile, simple structure, and ease of manufacture. This module is composed of a lens antenna and a detector module that consists of a detector circuit and a broadband microstrip-to-waveguide transition. The module forms a layer structure as a printed substrate with detector circuit is fixed between two metal plates with horn antennas and back-short waveguides. We developed a broadband passive millimeter-wave imaging module composed of a lens antenna and a detector module in this work. The gain and the antenna efficiency were measured, and the broadband operation was observed for the lens antenna. For the detector module, peak sensitivity was 8100 V/W. Furthermore, the detector module recognized a difference in the absorber’s temperature. The designs of the lens antenna and the detector module are presented and the RF performances of these components are reported. Finally, passive millimeter-wave imaging of a car, a human, and a metal plate in clothes is demonstrated in this paper.

Low-Sidelobe Design of Microstrip Comb-Line Antennas Using Stub-Integrated Radiating Elements in the Millimeter-Wave Band Reviewed

IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation 60 ( 10 ) 4699 - 4709 2012.10

A novel radiating element with a matching circuit was developed for comb-line antennas of traveling-wave operation. In the design of low-sidelobe traveling-wave array antennas, large coupling is required for array elements of the comb-line antenna around the input port. Furthermore, the traveling-wave arrays, whose number of elements is small, also require large coupling because the radiation power for each array element is assigned to be much larger. However, wide radiating elements for large coupling perform poor impedance matching characteristics and radiate large cross polarization. Thus, we proposed a novel radiating element with matching stub in parallel to the radiating element to realize strong radiating power, low reflection, and low cross-polarization, simultaneously. The simulated and measured performances of low-sidelobe 14-element and 6-element antennas were demonstrated in this paper.

Millimeter-wave Microstrip Comb-line Antenna Using Reflection-canceling Slit Structure Reviewed

IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation 59 ( 2 ) 398 - 406 2011.02

A microstrip comb-line antenna is developed in the millimeter-wave band. When the element spacing is one guide wavelength for the broadside beam in the traveling-wave excitation, reflections from all the radiating elements are synthesized in phase. Therefore, the return loss increases significantly. Furthermore, re-radiation from elements due to the reflection wave degrades the design accuracy for the required radiation pattern. We propose the way to improve the reflection characteristic of the antenna with arbitrary beam directions including strictly a broadside direction. To suppress the reflection, we propose a reflection-canceling slit structure installed on the feeding line around each radiating element. A 27-element linear array antenna with a broadside beam is developed at 76.5 GHz. To confirm the feasibility of the simple design procedure, the performance is evaluated through the measurement in the millimeter-wave band.
