おもに2階線形偏微分方程式論の入門書である。前半ではフーリエ解析を使わない偏微分方程式論を展開し、後半ではフーリエ級数、フーリエ変換を導入してその応用として偏微分方程式論を紹介している。使っている道具は複素関数論の一部を除き基本的にすべて紹介しており、他書を参考にしなければならない部分は極めて少ない。
