To understand gender identity, knowledge on gender differences in relationships between health-related behavior and human relations is beneficial. The present study dealt with Type A behavior pattern (Type A) as a health-related behavior, and social support as a part of human relations. Type A and social support are two well-known constructs as psychosocial factors related to health issues. The purpose of this study was to examine gender differences in the relationship between Type A and social support as well as each construct in Japanese people. To begin with, after gender differences in Type A and social support and the relationship between these two constructs were reported, previous studies on the constructs with the Japanese population were reviewed. Next, the findings on gender differences in the relationship between Type A and social support were reported. It was hypothesized that: (a) Type A would decrease the number of supports for individuals, and (b) this decreased number of supports would in turn reduce the level of individuals' satisfaction with the amount of available support. Subjects were 309 female and 273 male Japanese college students, all of whom completed the 14-item Bortner's Type A behavior questionnaire and the 6-item Social Support Questionnaire Short-Form. The results indicated that although no significant gender differences were found in the score for the Type A scale, the score for the number of supports scale was significantly higher in women while the score for the satisfaction with support scale was significantly higher in men. Maximum likelihood factor analysis indicated that there was evidence for the same underlying factor pattern across men and women. Gender differences in the hypothesized causal model including Type A and social support was analyzed by simultaneous 2-group covariance structure analysis. The model adequately fitted the data from both men and women. The findings revealed that two Type A components, (1) fast-pace and hard-driving and (2) impatience and emphaticalness, negatively influenced the perceived number of supports, which in turn led to decreased satisfaction with the amount of available support. As results, the causal model was supported both in men and women. Furthermore, it was found that there were no gender differences in the model. The implications of the results are discussed.
