We propose an optically wireless millimeter-wave beam-forming based-on an antenna array with an electro-optic (EO) modulator for applications to communication and radar. An Array of patch-antennas are fabricated on an EO modulator bonded with a low dielectric constant material for receiving wireless millimeter-wave signals and converting the received millimeter-wave to lightwave signals through the Pockels effects of an EO crystal. By using the array structure, high antenna gain and narrow wireless millimeter-wave beam-width can be obtained for effective operation. Furthermore, the beam-forming of wireless millimeter-wave signals can be controlled to certain direction using polarization-reversed methods. The polarization-reversed method with meandering gaps in the metal patch is used, where it has simple structure and easy in realization. In this report, analysis of the optically wireless beam-forming with narrow beam-width (<5 degree) and large beam scanning area (up to 120 degree) for millimeter-wave operations is discussed. The optically millimeter-wave beam-forming can be used for realizing directed wireless communication and scanned millimeter-wave radar systems.

Effects of Optical Phase Noise and Fiber Dispersion on Performance of LTE-A Signal Transmission over a Seamless Fiber-MMW System

Language:English Publisher:The Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers
Optical phase noise and fiber dispersion induced effects are important impairments that would limit the performance of a seamless fiber-wireless system. In this paper, we experimentally investigate the effects of these impairments on performance of an LTE-A signal transmission over a seamless fiber-millimeter-wave system at 92.5 GHz. To evaluate the effects of optical phase noise, we compare the performance of a modulator-based optical two-tone signal generator using dual-wavelength and single-wavelength with different fiber-delay lengths for data modulation, and an optical heterodyne system using a free-running laser for a local oscillator. For evaluation of fiber dispersion induced effects, different fiber transmission lengths are used for the signal transmission in each case. At the receiver, to avoid the effects of frequency offset and electrical phase noise, a simple direct detection scheme using an envelope detector is used.

Seamless radio-over-fiber (RoF) transmission of W-Band millimeter-wave signals is a promising technology for high-capacity "last-mile" radio access with increased network resilience to natural disasters. Also, mode-division multiplexing (MDM) utilized by differential modal group delay (DMGD)-compensated few-mode fiber (FMF) links can offer high multiplexing gain with low computational complexity. Here, 10Gbps-order RoF transmission is demonstrated using 92.5 GHz W-Band signals over a wireless path of 2.5-m and a 30-km DMGD-compensated MDM link. 5 and 10 GBaud QPSK and BPSK signals were studied and capacities up to 20Gbps were achieved, when considering 7% forward error correction (FEC) overhead.

In this photonics-based radio signal generation, optimization of the radio signal quality, particularly in frequency fluctuation, is a key for realization on the system because all the radio waves should be consistent with radio regulations. In the paper, we evaluate the signal quality difference on frequency fluctuations using two signal generation methods in a high-capacity fiber-wireless link.

To increase the total capacity of radio access networks, the introduction of small-cell architectures will be indispensable. By applying analog radio-over-fiber technologies, equipment at the cell site in the small-cell architecture can be simplified. This enables people to offer enriched daily wireless access services over wide areas in a cost-effective way. In case of large disaster, since the demand for wireless access will be very high after disaster, e.g., for safety-confirmation, victim relief, etc., the cost-effective and high-capacity wireless access networks play a significant role in disaster recovery. We have been investigating the analog radio-over-fiber transmission systems which accommodate radio signals over optical fibers in a robust way. In addition, we have also been investigating other technologies, e.g., multi-vendor optical network interconnection technology, flexible wavelength resource reallocation technology, etc. In this paper, we introduce our studies on the optical network technologies from the perspective of disaster resiliency.

To meet the demand of high-speed wireless communications, higher frequency radio such as a millimeter-wave and terahertz wave bands has been attracting attention. For generation of these high-frequency carriers, an optical technology is one of the promising candidates. However, using free-running lasers, resultant frequency fluctuation provided by the beat note between two optical components is a significant issue, hi this paper, we propose suppression technique of the frequency fluctuation generated by free-running lasers using an optical frequency locked loop (OFLL) technique configured with a feed-forward control. In addition, possibility of a millimeter-wave signal generation using an optical frequency comb (OFC) is also discussed.

High-speed signal transport technology to high-speed vehicles with a capacity of several Gbit/s is discussed. A key technology is comprised of millimeter-wave radio access technology and radio-over-fiber-based optical network between the millimeter-wave radio access unit and central office. The technology can realize adaptive signal transport to the vehicle with tracking the location of the vehicle by the control information at the central office. It is also discussed with high-speed and high-capacity signal transport without any signal processing such as a media conversion at the radio access unit.

Information data being transmitted must be routed through various physical transmission paths with various physical transmission mediums. Therefore, it seems natural that a radio system is also connected to various other transmission systems. In radio services with a lot of radio access points, such as mobile services, the collaboration of the other transmission system will be unavoidable. In this paper, a basic element common to the purpose of various transmission systems collaborated with radio links on a physical layer, which called "Radio over X (RoX)", is proposed. Then, a new scheme of an efficient transmission on a physical layer, which is called "modulation-symbol-format maintaining transmission", is also proposed. In these proposals, the functional definition of a media conversion is a key. Moreover, as examples of application to next generation mobile services, some experimental demonstrations are shown.

In optical fiber communication systems, demands for real-time coherent detection is rapidly raised. To do that, optical phase-locking technique is required. Digital coherent receiver is a powerful technique for detecting PSK or QAM signals. However, the receiver requires high-speed digital signal processor clocked at the symbol rate or higher rate. As an alternative way, we have demonstrated real-time coherent detection based on digital optical phase-locked loop. Introducing experimental demonstration of high-speed BPSK detection, we discuss how we can apply the DOPLL technology to microwave photonic radio-over fiber systems.

We configure and demonstrate broadband signal generation at 90-GHz band using optical modulation technologies. The frequency up-chirp signal is applicable for millimeter-wave radar system. Observed degradation of a phase noise is followed by a theoretical estimated value, so the optical frequency quadrupler based on the optical modulation realizes a broadband frequency quadrupler with capability of millimeter-wave signal with resulting frequency-sweep speed of 35 PHz/s. The quadrupler is capable for high precision radar system at the millimeter-wave band.

Pioneering optical frequency resources is essential to enhance a photonic network capacity. Currently, we have focused on a use of a 1.0-1.26μm wavelength band (Thousand-band: T-band) and 1.26-1.32μm wavelength band (O-band) as the novel optical frequency resources for the optical communications. Semiconductor quantum dot (QD) structure is expected to become attractive optical gain material for high-performance and ultra-broadband photonic ICT devices used in the T+O band. In this paper, we propose some technique such as sandwiched sub-nano separator (SSNS) to obtain a high-quality and broadband QD optical gain. We successfully develop and characterize a wavelength tunable QD laser, QD optical frequency comb laser (QD-CML), and high-frequency optical mode-locked QD laser.

We discuss a multi-band radio-over-fiber (RoF) transmission system at a millimeter-wave band, such as 40- and 60-GHz bands, using high-speed optical modulator. Combination of the broadband optical modulator and an optical filter can form a single-sideband optical signal to transmit the millimeter-wave signal over a long optical fiber. Possibility of the millimeter-wave signal transmission without distortions is also discussed with a result of observed spurious-free dynamic range of the RoF system.

A two-wavelength emission laser can be used to generate millimeter and terahertz waves by irradiating high speed photodiodes or nonlinear crystals. Recently, electro-magnetic waves at such frequencies have become important for high speed wireless communication and accurate sensing. The external cavity wavelength tunable quantum-dot (QD) laser is a candidate for fabrication of a two-wavelength emission laser because of its properties such as a simple structure, wide range of wavelength tunability, narrow linewidth, and emission wavelength stability. We have developed a QD wavelength tunable laser with a narrow linewidth and stable emission wavelength. In this study, we achieved two-wavelength emissions in the QD wavelength tunable laser by changing the external cavity configuration.

In this paper, we propose a method to measure total chirp of integrated parallel Mach-Zehnder-type modulators by analyzing optical spectrum components. The method can be applied to characterize the modulators without any restriction on extinction ratio and permit to evaluate the chirp parameter at a specific frequency. Dual-polarization Quadruture Phase-Shift Keying (DP-QPSK) modulator can simply generate Radio-over-Fiber (RoF) signal. DP-QPSK modulator was developed for 100 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) and consists two IQ modulator. It is utilized for generation two QPSK signal for each polarization. In this study, we propose that one polarization is worked as RoF-LO signal using single sideband suppressed carrier modulation, and other polarization for QPSK modulation. This technique can generate 25GHz 5Gbps QPSK RoF signal.

Purpose of this experiment is generating picosecond pulse in the 1 μm region where expected as a new wave length range. Our pulse generation system uses MaclrZehnder-modulation-based flat comb (MZ-FCG). Because MZ-FCG has simple configuration and high controllability. Continuous wave (CW) light led to the MZ-FCG driven by two radio frequency sinusoidal signal. And MZ-FCG modulated CW light to the ultra flat comb signal. In time domain we can observe the ultra flat comb as picosecond pulse. By this system we succeed to generate lO.lps-width and repetition rate of 12.5GHz at 1060nm wave-length .

The generation mechanism of 16QAM is based on an electro-optic vector digital-to-analog converter, which can generate optical multilevel signals from binary electric data sequences. This modulator is utilized a dual-polarization MZM, outputting two QPSK signals with orthogonal polarization. The QPSK signals are superposed by a polarizer, in which the amplitude ratio between them is precisely controlled by rotating the polarizer to arrange the 16 symbols equally. We investigate electro-optic digital-to-analog converter (EO-DAC) that can synthesize several types of optical multilevel signals, such as nQAM and nPSK. Conventionally, optical vector IQ modulator is utilized to synthesize optical QAM, where inphase and quadrature components of optical carrier orthoganally signalled in multi-level. In this case, the analog channel between an electric digital-to-analogue converter and the vector modulator should be carefully managed keeping adequate lineality. In the EO-DAC, on the other hand, optical QAM is synthesized from electric binary data sequences, ...

We successfully fabricated a high-speed optical vector modulator for over 100Gb/s signal generation. An electric-electric frequency response originating from a substrate mode-coupling is improved by using 0.1mm-thick LiNbO_3 substrate. The optimization of the modulator structure realizes a lower half-wave voltage of the modulator. We demonstrated 100Gb/s (50 Gbaud) NRZ-DQPSK modulation and 90Gb/s NRZ-DBPSK modulation.

The concept of multi-channel complex permittivity measurement using a live electrooptic imaging (LEI) camera is proposed. The complex permittivity of aqueous sample has been evaluated successfully with the transmitted microwave intensity and phase information, and coincides well with those reported in the literature. The instantaneous observation functionality of using the LEI camera could be beneficial for prompt multi-channel complex permittivity analysis.
