This research project will develop a completely novel technology for the construction of new types of structures through the prototyping of composite steel decks made with a core of metal foam. The main features of the proposed panels will be the low-weight, the biomimetic structure (i.e. materials with cellular structure inspired from biological micro-structures) able to mitigate buckling, the improved sustainability, the blast mitigation capacity and high energy absorption.
The development of new products, together with the definition of design rules established in the framework of European and Japanese codes will promote the introduction of the proposed Steel-Foam-Steel (SFS) panels in the design practice. Considering that no applications of metal foams in civil engineering exist, all the experimental work done and the codification efforts, will represent a breakthrough for the market and an important reference for the forthcoming studies. The scientific work developed jointly between Italy and Japan it is expected to open unexplored fields of applicative research.
The project will improve the cooperation between the Italian and Japanese parties enabling the two research groups to share the common experiences to solve problems which affect both countries. In particular, the proposal is specifically devoted to seismic and sustainability issues which both Italy and Japan need to target in order to improve safety, health and quality of life of their populations. The project will result in new solutions which will be used effectively in both countries. -
