    Abstract: The sense of hearing can provide immediate information about remote events, even when outside of the field of vision and beyond obstacles, facilitating functioning in uncontrolled environments. Hearing impairment can thus have a huge disabling effect on an individual. This paper proposes a wearable selfcontained dedicated device capable of full-plane sound localization. The system, shaped as a glass frame, uses only four microphones spaced by 10 mm, and is initially targeted at a resolution of 45°. The individual binaural angles are calculated by a process loosely based on the human hearing system. These angles are then combined in order to determine the final direction. A prototype of the proposed system was implemented using 3D printing and MEMS microphones. Experiments with the prototype in a reverberant environment show an error of 6.73° when it is tested standalone and 21.16° when tested in a dummy head.

    本研究では透過型情報提示デバイスを用いた音の可視化による情報保障環境をモデル化し、その際の精神的作業負担(メンタルワークロード)の評価を行った。生理的指 標として前頭連合野の脳血流による脳賦活状態を計測した。その結果、音源識別タス ク、音源定位タスクでは情報提示に対する脳血流の増加が観測され、認知作業による 神経活動の亢進が確認できた。また両タスクにおける反応時間は1秒以内であり、危 険回避に対する人の知覚反応時間の範囲に収まる結果となった。後方視界タスクでは 安全基準からの遅延が見られた。音源識別タスクについては、音声の聴覚情報に対し 速く反応する被験者と絵文字の視覚情報に対し速く反応する被験者の2つのグループ に分けられた。さらに脳血流の増加と反応時間の短縮に相関が認められた。したがっ て安全な反応や行動の切り換えを行うためには、注意の切り換えを促進させるような 脳の賦活化を伴う情報提示が必要となることが示唆される。

  • Assessment of the Saftey of the See-through Information Presentation During Walking ーAStudy on the Visualization of Sounds Using aHead -mounted Display

    This study is to examine the safety of the see-through information presentation on basis of the reaction time and the cognitive load when walking. In Assessment experiment 1, advanced validation was conducted on healthy individuals by performing an indoor model experiment. The results showed no delays in reaction time in terms of the types and directions of sounds using a perception-reaction time of approximately 0.7 to 1 s as a safety standard, thus confirming the safety of the see-through information presentation. In Assessment experiment 2, a simulated assessment experiment in a realistic environment was conducted on both individuals with impaired hearing and healthy adults. The results showed that when the see-through information presentation was used while walking outside, the reaction time of some individuals was delayed.

    IMAGE FORMING APPARRATUS

    An image forming apparatus including a main body provided with a section for forming an image on a copy paper, a paper supply section arranged below the main body for supplying the copy paper to the main body and a paper discharge section arranged below the main body for receiving the copy paper on which the image has been formed from the main body. The main body, the paper supply section and the paper discharge section are constituted separately and detachable from each other and are vertically arranged in an overlapped manner. The apparatus has a first conveyer for vertically transporting the copy paper from the paper supply section to the main body and a second conveyer for vertically transporting the copy paper from the main body to the paper discharge section. Therefore, the apparatus occupies the least possible mounting area.

    We evaluated the safety and visibility of a transmission-type head-mounted display (HMD) device used as a display medium for visualizing sound while walking. In outdoor walking evaluation tests, the HMD was safely used by approximately half of the subjects when information was provided within the safety response index-a perception-reaction time of 0.7-1 s, which is considered a safe response time during outdoor walking. This implies that half of the subjects would require some from of training time to use the device safely. Additionally, tests for rearward visibility, typically a blind spot for individuals with hearing impairments, indicated that information displayed while walking was not presented within the safe reaction speed. Using the results of these tests, we developed a HMD device for differentiating sound that can be used while walking outdoors.
